Caddo Scouts gain new director
Scout-O-Rama taking place this weekend at Spring Lake Park
Anthony Escobar has taken charge of the Caddo Area Council Boy Scouts.
He replaces Guy Wilemon, who was Caddo Area executive for six years and then left for the national office in Irving, Texas.
Escobar lists his goals as growing Scouting and continuing to guide the council as an organization that trains the next generation. Escobar arrived just in time to help set up the Caddo Area Scout-O-Rama, which takes place over the weekend at Spring Lake Park. One of today’s highlights is the Chili Cookoff.
“If you look for me, I’ll be the guy with two spoons,” he said. “You better believe I’m going to be there.”
Describing Scout-O-Rama as a “very busy time,” he will oversee a weekend full of events, including an 1800sera cannon fire and hot air ballons.
Among the traditional Scouting activities are a pinewood derby, soapbox car racing and skits.
Though bad weather is in the forecast for the weekend, Scout-O-Rama organizers have a contingency plan in place.
“If we get bad lightning or tornadic activity, we have a building to move everybody into. We will be monitoring the weather,” said Jim Standridge, ScoutO-Rama public information director. “On Saturday the rain looks to be out of here early, so nothing will change. It looks like all the Saturday activities will be fine.”
The area of the park where Scouts are will be closed to the public this afternoon.
“The intent of opening this up to the public is to try and get young people interested in Scouting. Scouting is a fun thing to do. It teaches leadership and self-sufficiency,” Standridge said in an earlier article. “It’s free for the public to attend. We’d sure like to have people come out and have a good time. There is something for everybody in the family to enjoy.”
