AHS teams swept

De Queen’s fast start too much for Razorbacks

- By Earl Gill

Mental mistakes continued to engulf Arkansas High on the baseball diamond.

De Queen defeated Arkansas High, 8-2, Friday at Razorback Field.

The first inning was the difference-maker throughout the entire contest.

The Leopards sneaked four runs on the scoreboard before the second out in the first.

“A few of those hits in the first inning were actually hits. If we would’ve made a few plays, we could’ve gotten out of that inning only down two,” Arkansas High head coach Layne Berry said. “We should’ve made plays here and there. I think the game was actually closer than the scoreboard showed.”

De Queen got to Arkansas High’s crafty ace Austin Nix early.

Tyler Miller led the Leopards at the plate, going 3 for 4.

Quinshawn Bennett and Hunter Earney, collected two hits apiece for De Queen.

Dylan Adcock entered the contest for the Hogs in relief in the middle of the first. Adcock struck out four, gave up four runs and allowed six hits in 4 2-3 innings worth of work.

Adcock finished 1 for 3 at the dish for Arkansas High.

Drake Browning, Jakob Johnson and Nix were bright spots for the Hogs in the batter’s box.

Browning was 2 for 4 at the plate for Arkansas High, swiping third base in the first. Johnson went 1 for 4 at the dish for the Hogs, adding an RBI and a stolen base. Nix was 2 for 3 at the plate for AHS, chipping in an RBI.

Berry acknowledged De Queen pitcher Brandon Hagood’s nine-strikeout performance.

“They beat us all around today. Hats off to that pitcher, he pitched a heckuva game,” Berry said. “They

made plays when they needed to and we were unable to. It’s as simple as that.”

The play of the game goes to Arkansas High’s utility Wren Williams.

Williams displayed his rifle of an arm, when he threw De Queen’s Tyler Miller out at second base from the right field foul pole.

“We kind of let one get away from us tonight. We have to regroup and get back to playing solid team ball,” Berry said. “One game doesn’t define a team nor a season.”

Arkansas High is back on the turf Tuesday, traveling to Mount Pleasant.
