Horatio tops Genoa, claims 7-3A title

HORATIO, Ark.—Horatio wrapped up the Conference 7-3A baseball championsh­ip Friday with a 4-1 victory over Genoa Central.

Despite both teams making four hits and having an error difference of only one, Horatio managed to secure the district title.

The Lions (20-7), who went under by one run after the first inning, brought in three runs in the second that would serve as a sufficient margin for the remainder of the game.

Logan Martin batted in the Dragons’ only run in the first inning. Tyler Moreland led Genoa Central’s batters with two hits on the night and Colby Cobb accounted for the Dragons’ remaining hit.

Horatio’s hitting was paced by Zach Izzo and Michael Jones, who each had one RBI.

Wade Beasley pitched the duration of the game for the Lions and struck out nine. REDWATER 3, QUEEN CITY 0

QUEEN CITY, Texas—Redwater scored late to defeat the host Bulldogs.

With the game scoreless, Peyton Davis singled off Robert Hill, driving in one Dragon run.

Jamey Vaitkus earned the win for Redwater. He threw three innings, allowing no runs, two hits, striking out one, and walking none. Hill took the loss for Queen City, going six innings, surrenderi­ng one run, three hits, and striking out two.

Brayden Ross started the game for Redwater. He went four innings, allowing zero runs, five hits, and walking zero.

Josue Rea went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Queen City.

John Michael Russ led Redwater with two hits in three at-bats. Redwater didn’t commit a single error in the field.

Queen City is now 18-6 overall and 10-4 in district play. JAMES BOWIE 8, DETROIT 1

The Pirates routed the Eagles in a league game.

The Pirates led 3-1 after 3 innings, before scoring 5 unanswered runs late for the final margin of victory.

The Pirates managed an 11-hit barrage off of the Pirates pitching. Cage Crowley had 3 hits and 3 RBI, Logan Graham had 3 hits and 1RBI, and Evan Barron had a double with 2RBI. Troy Jenkins had 2 hits for the Eagles, and Austin Tucker drove in the lone run for the Eagles with a single in the losing effort.

NASHVILLE 7, MALVERN 1

NASHVILLE, Ark.—The Scrappers made easy work of the Leopards , rolling to the win.

With the game tied at 1, the Scrappers posted a 6-run, fourth inning, and cruised to the win. Trace Beene led the Scrappers with a 3-run double, and Zach Jamison also pitched in a hit and an RBI along with striking out 10 Leopard batters. The Leopards scored their only run on a solo home run in the third inning off the bat of Brandon Scott, in the loss. The Scrappers advance to the championsh­ip game to take on Arkadelphi­a.

NASHVILLE 10, ARKADELPHI­A 0 (5 INNINGS)

NASHVILLE, Ark.—The host Scrappers won the District 4A tournament in easy fashion on Friday, shutting out the Badgers by way of the 10-run mercy rule in 5 innings.

The Scrappers carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning before exploding for 9 unanswered runs. Pitcher Preston Pope was dominant in victory, holding the Badgers to 1 hit on the day. Chris Willard had 2 singles, a double and 2 RBI, Tyler Hanson had a single, a triple and an RBI, and Trace Beene had a double and an RBI to provide the offensive muscle for the Scrappers (24-7), who advance to the South Regional in Monticello with the date and time TBA.
