17 Texas teams after state titles

James Bowie boys earn first-week bye

Sixteen of the 17 teams in the UIL softball and baseball playoffs are in action this week with James Bowie earning a bye until next weeks’ Class 2A area round.

Atlanta, which rallied to beat Van twice Saturday night, faces Rusk in a Class 4A area softball series at Hallsville’s Lady Cat Field. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday, and the second game will start at 1 p.m. Saturday. A third game, if needed, will start after a 30-minute intermissi­on following the completion of Game 2.

Hughes Springs tussles with New Diana in a Class 3A area series at East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas. The opener will be played at 6 p.m. Friday with Game 2 to follow. If a third game is needed, it will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday back at ETBU.

Hooks and Harmony clash in a 3A area series at Northeast Texas Community College in Mount Pleasant. Game 1 is slated for 6 p.m. Friday with the second game to follow. If a third game is needed, it is scheduled for noon Saturday.

Redwater plays a homeand-home 3A area series with White Oak. The Lady Necks host the Lady Dragons at 6 p.m. Friday, and the series moves to Redwater for Game 2 at noon Saturday. If the series is tied, a third game will follow a

30-minute intermissi­on.

Avery, which received a first round bye last week, plays a 2A area series against Cross Roads at Le Tourneau University in Longview. The opener will be played at 6:30 p.m., and the series resumes at 3 p.m. Saturday with Games 2 and 3, if needed.

Maud and Hawkins meet in a single eliminatio­n 2A area game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Northeast Texas Community College, and McLeod and Martin’s Mill clash at 7 p.m. Thursday at Gilmer in a onegame 2A area matchup.

In the baseball playoffs, Texas High hosts Forney for the entire Class 5A bi-district baseball series. Games 1 and 2 will be played Friday at Tiger Field starting at 4 p.m. A third game, if needed, is scheduled for noon Saturday.

Pleasant Grove and Van meet in a 4A bi-district home-andhome series. Game 1 will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Hawk Field, and the series moves to Van for Game 2 at 2 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will follow a 30-minute intermissi­on.

Atlanta, which bested Pittsburg 1-0 to wrap up the fourth playoff spot, faces Canton in a 4A home-andhome bi-district series. The Rabbs host the Eagles at 7 p.m. Friday, and Eagle Field will the site of Game 2 at 1 p.m. Saturday. A third game, if needed, will also be held Saturday.

Hughes Springs plays Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill in a 3A single-eliminatio­n game at 7 p.m. Friday at Eagle Field at Bob Baker Stadium on the campus of Northeast Texas Community College.

Hooks, which won two games Monday to clinch second place from 14-3A, plays Prairiland in a bi-district series at Pittsburg. Game 1 will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, and the series continues at 11 a.m. Saturday with Game 2 and a third game, if needed.

Queen City and Cooper clash at Mount Pleasant’s O.L. Colley Field in a 3A series with the opener at 7 p.m. Friday. game 2 is set for noon Saturday, with a third game, if needed, to follow.

Redwater plays Winnsboro in one game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Harleton.

James Bowie received a bye after winning District 17-2A. Maud was second and plays Campbell in a single game for the bi-district round at 7 p.m. Friday at Mount Vernon High School.

Linden-Kildare placed third and will play Cumby in a bestof-3 series starting Friday, but the site had yet to be determined.
