PG’s Henry makes Newcomer of Year

- By Brian Tyl

She is a leader, has speed and poise, and is just a freshman.

Pleasant Grove point guard Sha’Nequa Henry is the Gazette’s Newcomer of the Year.

“We were excited about having Sha’Nequa on our varsity team,” Lady Hawk head coach Jason Boston said. “It was a unique situation in that she would be point guard as a freshman. We knew how talented she was and that her step up to varsity would be successful.”

Henry had a great year as she

averaged 14.4 points, 5.1 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Henry’s quick decision making and ability to use both hands has made her one of the area’s top up-and-coming basketball players.

“She’s just so smooth, has good court vision and can change speed and direction easily,” Boston said. “Her passing ability is great, and she gets everyone involved. When we needed her to go to the basket, she did that, too.”

Henry would attack the basket aggressively when the Hawks needed to inch closer to an opponent. She drove to the hoop and banked in layups with either hand when it was most needed.

When Henry wasn’t driving, she found the open player and made a beautiful pass for an easy bucket for PG. Other times, Henry ran the offense, sometimes having to reset, until she dished to the player with an open look.

The Hawk standout played superb defense and many teams found it hard to dribble around her. Henry is also a great student.

“Sha’Nequa does well in the classroom, is smart, and is a great reflection of the school,” Boston said. “It’s nice to work with really good young players at the start of the season.”
