- By Greg Bischof

NEW BOSTON, Texas—The agricultural extension offices of five regional counties will participate in this year’s Northeast Texas 4-H Family Consumer Science Learn & Play Days.

Members of 4-H and nonmembers in grades three to 12 will get the chance to take part in variety of six life skills home economic sessions each Wednesday over a 10-week period this summer.

Each of the six Play Days will be hosted by agricultural extension offices in each of the five counties. For a $5 enrollment fee per participant, students will get a chance learn fashion, canning, kitchen and food safety skills as well as how to prepare simple meals and pick up healthy meal tips.

The session will take place between 1 and 4 p.m. Wednesday each of the six weeks. The first session, focusing on canning jams, will be held at the law enforcement training center on Cass County Road 1913 near U.S. Highway 59 and Texas State Highway 11, said Michelle Valentine, Cass County Extension agent for Family and Consumer Sciences

Besides canning jams, Valentine said each student will be given ingredients in order to prepare a recipe in 40 minutes.

The other five sessions will be June 21 in Gilmer ( Upshur County), then back in Linden (Cass County) June 28 for “Kitchen Challenge,” similar to the cable TV show “Chopped Junior.”

Following a two-week break, the sessions will pick back up again July 19 in Daingerfield (Morris County), with a focus on “Fashion Creations,” then on to New Boston ( Bowie County) July 26 for “Clothing & Textiles—and finally finishing in Jefferson, Texas (Marion County) with session on “Healthy Living.”
