TC to host enrollment event July 14 on campus

-

Texarkana College will hold Summerfest, an enrollment event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 14 on the campus at 2500 N. Robison Road.

Summerfest is designed to be a fun environment for potential students to bring families and friends with them while speaking with school representatives about the enrollment process. Students can complete forms and applications to TC or the university of their choice through the school’s Education Opportunity Center. The federally-funded program provides access to trained advisers to assist potential students in completing online financial aid applications, identifying a career pathway and helping them find programs that meet their needs.

“The goal of the program is to help first time in college students start off on the right track as they begin their pursuit of a college credential,” said Education Opportunity Center coordinator Chaddrick Moore. “Our center is like a one-stop shop with all the resources you need in a central location. Whether you are hoping to earn a workforce or vocational certificate, or earn academic credit toward an associate or bachelor’s degree, we can help.”

Resources also include guidance on earning a high school equivalency diploma and information for veterans seeking college credit.

The Education Opportunity Center is part of the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO program, providing assistance primarily to low income, first generation college students. Participants must be at least age 19 and be a U.S. citizen residing in Bowie or Cass County. To date, TC has served close to 1,098 prospective new college students.

“We feel great about the services we’ve been able to provide through EOC and we’re helping the state meet their strategic goal of 60 percent of all Texans earning a higher education degree or credential by the year 2030 (60x30TX),” Moore said. “Our participants have a brighter future in store for them because they’ve had a step-up toward success. We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to assist so many people and to help them achieve their dream toward brighter futures.”

The event will also feature food, door prizes, children’s activities and a $1,000 money booth sponsored by TEXAR Federal Credit Union.

“When you complete one of the enrollment processes (apply, turn in transcripts, complete financial aid, register for classes, etc…) you will be eligible to step into the money booth for several seconds and grab actual cash being blown around inside a telephone booth-sized cube,” said Lydia Barnhart, TC student recruiter coordinator. “You keep what you grab! Our hope is that this event will ‘grab’ your attention on the importance of completing your college degree.”
