Bombers hang on to defeat Twins Saturday

- By Bob Krayl

The Texarkana Twins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Brazos Valley Bombers then scored nine unanswered runs and held on for a 9-5 victory Saturday evening at George Dobson Field.

The victory by the Bombers evened the two-game series as the Twins won, 9-6, Friday evening.

Texarkana grabbed an early 3-0 lead on two hits in the first inning.

Gunner Halter and Chandler Robertson drew walks, but Halter was tossed out trying to steal.

Troy Black singled and Alex Rodriguez was hit by the pitch to load the bases.

Johnny Gonzalez then doubled home two runs, and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Bottger scored Rodriguez.

The Bombers got a run back quickly on a home run over the left field wall by Blake Clanton in the second inning.

The Twins had a double by Chad McKinney and a single by Halter in the bottom of the second, but a double play ended the inning.

Brazos Valley scored a run on two hits in the third, and took the lead, 4-3, with two runs on four hits, singles by Chase Calabuig, Kyle O'Keefe, Ben Bailey and Dalton Stark in the fourth frame.

The Bombers' Jared Mang made it, 5-3, with a home run in the fifth.

After the two hits by the Twins in the second inning, the Bombers' pitchers retired 11 batters in a row until Jaxxon Grisham singled with two outs in the sixth.

Texarkana threatened in the seventh when Halter tripled to deep right-center. Walks to Black and Rodriguez loaded the bases, but relief pitcher Brandon Ivey got out of trouble without any scoring.

Brazos Valley took command of the game in the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits for a 9-3 advantage.

The Twins scored single runs and in eighth and ninth innings without the benefit of a base hit.

Texarkana had only six hits with Halter leading the way with a triple and single.

Mang paced the Bombers' 13-hit attack with the homer and two singles, and Bailey and Stark chipped in with three singles each. Brazos Valley=011=210=040=—=9=13=2 Texarkana=300=000=011=—=5=6=1 C.J.
