Ace in the hole
Local landmark needs repairs to the tune of $300,000
The Ace of Clubs House, which needs funding to take care of some structural repairs, recently received help from Texarkana, Texas.
Earlier this month, Texas-side city officials gave $11,331 in reserve maintenance municipal funds, to the Texarkana Museums System. The money aided TMS in putting up a total of $25,276 in matching funds required to receive as much as $50,276 in state grant money through the Texas Preservation Trust Fund Grant Program.
The municipal contribution came from funds generated by the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax Fund, said Texasside Public Information Officer Lisa Thompson.
The city’s contribution, coupled with another $13,945 collectively made by the Offenhauser Insurance Company, a recent Morriss Elementary School student art auction and private donations to the TMS, raised the $25,276 required to be in the running for the state’s $50,276.
The TMS will ultimately need to raise $300,000 to conduct the necessary roof drainage and gutter repairs on the late 19th Century vintage home.
“We are very excited that the Ace of Clubs House may get to join the Hotel Grim, Pecan Point Brewery and the (original) Sears & Roebuck building in getting some much needed repairs, thanks to our donors and to the City of Texarkana, Texas,” said TMS Board President Velvet Cool in a prepared statement. “We will still have a long way to go to reach our ultimate goal of $300,000, but we have a great deal of faith in our community’s continued support.”
