Farmers’ Market annual salsa contest scheduled for Saturday

- By Karl Richter

The eighth annual Best Salsa in the Ark-La-Tex Contest will feature a new children’s division Saturday at Texarkana, Texas, Farmers’ Market.

Anyone can enter their salsa in one of six categories: mild, medium, hot, smokin’ hot, specialty or children’s for participants age 13 and under.

“To enter, simply bring four pints of salsa to the Farmers’ Market the morning of the event,” market manager Holden Fleming said.

Salsa registration starts at 7:30 a.m., and free tastings will be available beginning at 8:30 a.m. Texas-side firefighters will be there to serve salsa and interact with market-goers.

The public will vote on their favorite salsas, and winners for each category will be announced at 11:00 a.m. Each category winner will receive a prize.

Along with the salsa contest, local vendors will be on hand selling fruits and vegetables, arts and crafts, and an assortment of other goods. Jazz by Bryan and Cathey will perform live music, and there will be special booths for children.

Saturday’s market will be the last of the summer season. A fall market will begin in September and a Christmas market in November.

“This has been the biggest and most successful season in our history, with more than 25 different vendors participating throughout the year,” Fleming said. “We’ve really enjoyed seeing the market grow in both vendors and customers and want to invite everyone out to help us to close out the market season.”
