Bulldogs fall to League City in tournament game

- By Brian Tyl

BRENHAM, Texas—The older, more experienced team dominated.

League City, who has 15 college players, run-ruled the young Texarkana Bulldogs, 15-2, at Fireman's Park in Game 1 of the American Legion Texas state tournament Wednesday.

Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is today at 10 a.m. back at Fireman's Park.

“Our youth was exposed today against collegiate players,” Bulldog head coach Kevin Sutton said. “We didn't make many errors, and we hit the ball better toward the end of the game. We left some runners on.”

Texarkana had some chances to score, but stranded seven.

“We hit the ball well, we just hit it right at their fielders,” Sutton said.

Rory Baugus started for Texarkana, gave up five runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked three.

Bryan Moore got the Bulldogs' first hit of the game with a single up the middle in the second frame. Jake Thompson followed with a single to left center with one out. Both runners were left stranded.

Hayden Hackett smacked a single to left field for Texarkana in the third.

The Bulldogs got a pair of hits in the fourth stanza. Jakob Hearne bounced a single up the middle, and Moore followed with a single to right center with one out.

League City pitcher Garrett Poston got two straight popups to end the threat in the fourth.

Texarkana got the bats going in the seventh. Thompson singled to right center, and Rodrigo Zaldivar followed with a double to the right-center fence.

Slayton Holland smoked a hot roller up the middle to score Thompson, and Hackett, the next batter, hit an RBI single to center for the Bulldogs' final run.
