State legislators to have moderated discussion Aug. 30 at TC
Texas Sen. Bryan Hughes and Rep. Gary VanDeaver will have a moderated conversation from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, in the Great Room of Texarkana College’s Truman Arnold Student Center, 2500 N. Robison Road.
The free event will be moderated by Evan Smith, co-founder and chief executive officer of the Texas Tribune, an online news organization with a nonpartisan reputation informing Texans about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues. Its mission is to bring greater transparency and accountability to public policy, politics and government through news, data and events.
Hughes, R-Mineola, is serving his first term representing Senate District 1. He is the vice chairman of the Senate State Affairs Committee and is on the Administration, Criminal Justice and Education committees. Hughes served seven terms in the Texas House and was on the board of trustees for the Stewards Foundation.
VanDeaver, R-New Boston, has served House District 1 since 2015. He is the vice chairman of the House Administration Committee and is on the Public Education and Appropriations committees and the Subcommittee on Educator Quality. VanDeaver has served as an educator in rural schools and was the superintendent of New Boston Independent School District.
