2017 Teen Choice Awards honor fan favorites on Fox

Stars assemble:

While it can seem like awards shows are a dime a dozen, the few that determine the winners based on the will of the fans are often extra fun to watch since anything can happen. The 2017 Teen Choice Awards do just that, and the ceremony airs Sunday, Aug. 13, on Fox.

True to the casual, fun spirit of the show, the winners of each category are awarded a custom surf board, which is meant to represent the laid-back style and freedom of summer. These winners are artists who teenage fans feel have made significant achievements in the fields of music, film, sports, television, fashion and more, and there’s a long list of nominees for this year’s event.

One of the standout nominees this year is the new CW series “Riverdale,” which is up for six awards. The show stars K.J. Apa (“Shortland Street”) as Archie Andrews and is based on the classic Archie comic book series — remember those beloved bathroom readers? The traditionally sunny and upbeat comics are now a dark and mysterious TV series, and CW seems to have hit a home run with this one as a new generation is eagerly connecting with these decades-old characters.

Nominated in the category of Choice Breakout TV Show, the show also boasts nominations for cast members Apa and Lili Reinhart (“Surviving Jack”) for Choice Breakout TV Star, characters Betty (Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse, “The Suite Life of Zack and Cody”) for Choice TV Ship (meaning two characters the show’s fandom hopes will get together romantically), and newcomer Camila Mendes — who plays the ever-seductive Veronica Lodge — for Choice Scene Stealer.

Other nominees include Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (“Baywatch,” 2017), Emma Watson (“Beauty and the Beast,” 2017), Harry Styles (“Dunkirk,” 2017), Gal Gadot (“Wonder Woman,” 2017) and many more. The 2017 Teen Choice Awards airs Sunday, Aug. 13, on Fox.

Trouble in paradise:

A new season of “Bachelor in Paradise” hits the waves Monday, Aug. 14, on ABC. For those who are unfamiliar with the series, it’s a reality series spinoff in which former contestants from “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette” live together in a tropical paradise in order to find love.

A camera crew has nearly unlimited access to their lives during filming, and, surprisingly, the show has helped unite many couples, in some cases even leading to marriage.

The series has been in the headlines lately, though, and not for positive reasons. An alleged instance of sexual misconduct occurred during filming in June, and the ensuing legal proceedings caused production to halt for a while.

For readers who were living under a rock and haven’t heard this story already, a scandalous “hookup” was recorded between contestants DeMario Jackson and Corinne Olympios — not that unusual for the steamy series. The trouble, however, began the next day, when concerned producers stopped filming because both contestants had been over-indulging in alcohol, and therefore may not have been fully able to give consent. Ultimately, both parties had very different stories concerning the altercation in question.

As the drama unfolds, viewers can expect to see some of the aftermath of that troubling event, and the show’s host, Chris Harrison, told “Entertainment Tonight” that we will get the full story: “First and foremost, I think a lot of people — some people on social media reached out and said we were tone deaf. And I need people to step back a little bit, wait and watch. All will be explained. Trust me. Have I left you guys hanging before in 16 years? No.”

Watch as this drama and so much more plays out in the season premiere of “Bachelor in Paradise,” airing Monday, Aug. 14, on ABC.

The ‘Real’ Housewives?:

Season 2 of “The Real Housewives of Dallas” airs Monday, Aug. 14, on Bravo, and the elite socialites of Dallas bring more drama than ever. While the wealthy cast members are not exactly a representation of the average woman, they do spend a lot of time and effort giving back to their communities — housewife Stephanie Hollman even donated bone marrow to a stranger. It’s a recipe for success when it comes to reality TV, and Bravo certainly has the market cornered when it comes to housewives.

Most of the ladies from season 1 return for this sophomore effort, minus Tiffany Hendra, who declined to return to the show full time so she can spend more time with family and various projects at home. There are, however, two new housewives this year: D’Andra Simmons and Kameron Westcott.

D’Andra was born and raised in Dallas and comes from a wealthy family. She lives in an exclusive neighborhood with her husband, Jeremy, and his 20-year-old son. Kameron grew up in California but moved to Texas for university, where she met her husband, Court. Pink is her signature color, and she certainly stands out from the crowd.

This season, fans can expect to watch as relationships are challenged and intrigue, betrayals and scandals ensue. LeeAnn seeks to repair her reputation while working on her anger management issues and reconnect with the other women. Cary tries to balance her life and work, doing her best to spend more time with her daughter. Brandi and Stephanie haven’t spoken in months, which causes tension in the group.

Tune in Monday, Aug. 14, on Bravo, for the season 2 premiere of “The Real Housewives of Dallas.”
