Habitat for Humanity plans fall fundraiser

- By Ashley Gardner

Habitat for Humanity of Texarkana has planned a new fundraiser, Diamonds for Doorways. The event takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Oct. 5 at The Silvermoon on Broad and will be catered by Juli’s Deli.

Tickets are $100 each and are limited. Each ticket is an entry into a give-away that includes a $5,000 Forevermark Diamond Pendant from Crocker’s Jewelers.

“When you come into event you’ll get a nice jewelry bag and it will have a number or code in it,” said Levi Jefferies, Habitat for Humanity board member. “At the end of the night we’ll have a drawing for the grand prize and throughout the night we’ll have a lot of give aways as well.”

Habitat for Humanity will use the money toward building houses for families in need.

“Right now we’re planning to build a home in Spring 2018. We are in the selection process now to pick a family. All the money goes to Habitat for materials to build a home. When the home

is built it’s financed with a zero percent interest load for the family but every home Habitat builds in now a give away. We are all about offering a handup and not a handout. These homes are purchased by the family. These are families with a steady income but they don’t qualify for typical financing and they slowly pay back our organization. Then we use that money to build other homes,” Jefferies said.

Habitat for Humanity of Texarkana builds a home about every 18 months.

“In some areas, they build two or three homes a year. We’ve been in the 18-month cycle for a while, but we’re really hoping to increase that. Texarkana does have a great need for affordable housing,” he said.

Habitat for Humanity customizes the size of the home to fit the size of the family.

“We build simple, quality-built homes for the size of the family. We don’t build them something extravagant. We build them something they can afford and be proud to own,” Jefferies said.

Event organizers are hoping to bring in $10,000 or more with Diamonds for Doorways.

“We’ll be able to raise more if get sponsorships for the event,” Jefferies said.
