Texas High at Bishop Lynch

-

TEAMS: Bishop Lynch at Texas High

KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m., Tiger Stadium at Grim Park

LAST WEEK: The Tigers LAST YEAR: Texas High opened its unbeaten regular season campaign with a 44-21 win over the Friars.

GAME FACTS: Lynch went on to win the TAPPS 6A state championship after a 5-5 regular season under first-year head coach Chuck Faucette. The Tigers are opening a new era with Gerry Stanford making his debut as head coach, replacing Barry Norton, who was at the school for 18 years. Nowgraduated Cade Pearson threw for a school-record 439 yards and five TDs against the Friars last season. Highly-touted junior Coltin Clack takes over the reigns at signal caller. The Friars return nine on defense and six on defense from last year's 9-5 team.

COACHES' COMMENTS: Bishop Lynch's Faucette—“We came together and everything jelled for us late last year. Texas High is a great program, and we use this game a good measuring stick. They're fast, wellcoached and athletic, and we have to play a great ballgame. Last year turnovers hurt us, and we didn't start the season very well.

“I want to see some more leadership from our guys, senior leadership. Anytime you are starting a new program with as new coach, there is going to be as learning curve. Now we have a year behind us, we were fortunate to finish strong and go on to win state. We need to come out and make fewer mistakes, execute on offense and be sure tacklers on defense. We have a lot of respect for Texas High, and this is a good way to start our season.”

Texas High's Stanford—“The biggest thing for us is, with a high level of competition, to go out there and compete at the highest level that our ability allows us to. We want to want to see our work in practice paying off; our kids have a high work ethic. Obviously, we want to improve each week and build

on the things we do well, and we want to keep improving in our schemes and execution.

“Lynch has a lot of confidence from winning a state championship last year. They've got a lot of players back, especially on defense, and some of their best players back on offense. That poses some problems because they have a tradition in their team, a lot of experience and a lot of good players. Their offense does a good job of giving you a lot of different looks, and they really make you execute when you have the ball.”
