New Boston Lions at Hooks Hornets

- By Brian Tyl

HOOKS, Texas—Two Class 3A teams, divided by just seven miles of interstate, battle it out on the gridiron in the opener for each team.

Hooks and New Boston face off in a rivalry varsity football game today at 7:30 p.m. at Hornet Stadium.

“It's going to be a tough-nosed game between two tough competitors,” Hooks head coach Chris Birdwell said. “It will be a grind for both teams, and I expect a close game.”

Last year's contest was decided by just two points, a 14-12 win for the Lions at Lion Stadium.

“It will be an exciting game between two schools that are close with a great atmosphere,” New Boston head coach Chris Fant said. “We have to limit their big plays and be able to manufacture first downs. We have to get big plays and limit our turnovers.”

Both teams will use two different quarterbacks.

Deaundre Robinson and Jake Bobbitt will split time under center for the Lions, while Mason Vasquez and Connor Price are the quarterbacks for the Hornets.

“We are going to have to control the front on offense and defense; if we can handle them up there, I think we will have as good a shot as anyone to win,” Birdwell said. “All of the kids know each other and some hang out together. Our kids are geared up and ready for it.”
