Weekend to-do list includes music, writing, comic con

- By Aaron Brand

If you’re looking for something to enjoy this big Labor Day weekend, we’ve got you covered for a few suggestions on what’s out there these next couple of days.

From a comic con to live tunes to a writing workshop, there’s a lot going on in addition to grilling and enjoying the pleasant, not-so-sweltering sweet weather we seem to have found as summer starts its departure.

Here’s a rundown of what’s going down:

1. Live music. Level brings his hit song “I Bet You Won’t” to The Event Center at 2315 Texas Boulevard tonight for an evening of live rap and hip-hop with locals Kuna Da Fool, Von Visa and DJ Hollygrove performing, too. Get your free vodka until midnight. That’s not all for the weekend. You’ll find Relentless, one of Texarkana’s busiest bands, playing unplugged tonight at one of Texarkana’s most creative eateries, Twisted Fork. The Fat Jack’s weekend calender has El Doradobased BlackStrap tonight making their Jack’s debut, Michael Howard and friends on Saturday night. Also on Saturday, catch the Ramer Gentry Band playing at 237 Pub & Pool.

The newly reborn BrightStar Theaters presents a family friendly Saturday night lineup of hard-rocking music with a triple bill of Solice, Trepid and Critical

Failure. Tickets are $5 in advance, $8 at the door for this rock party, 7 p.m start time. Trepid hails from Shreveport, and they parlay a mix of many stylings in their sound, from metal to blues and grunge. Also from Louisiana, Critical Failure also aims for a dynamic mix of different styles within a hard rock/metal framework.

2. If you’re a writer, perhaps use the end of summer as a moment to reflect upon the season. The Texarkana Museums System hosts a Summer Creative Writing Workshop Saturday at the Museum of Regional History. It starts at 2 p.m. under the guidance of Texas High School English teacher Kara Wicks.

The workshop focuses on some of the writing essentials: plot, setting, characters and more. Anyone under 18 should be accompanied by an adult, but they are welcome to join in. Admission is $5 for TMS members, $10 for non-members. Call 903-793-4831 to make a requested reservation.

Says Wicks in a blurb about the workshop, “We can write to process our thoughts, from the mundane to the memorable, and the greatest part is that we often discover new ideas in the process. I believe Flannery O’Connor said ‘I write because I don’t know what I think until I read what I say.’”

For any writer, those are wise words to savor.

3. Texarkana’s Ark-La-Tex Comic Con has become quite the successful late-summer proudgeek emporium at the Texarkana Convention Center. This Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the comic con floor is filled with cosplayers, game tournaments, vendors showcasing comic books and art and more, panels, contests and much more.

Guests include Aron Eisenberg (Nog on “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine”), Tracee Cocco (Lieutenant Jae on “Star Trek: The Next Generation”) and, from the Star Wars flick “The Phantom Menace” as Mas Amedda, Jerome St. John Blake.

Adult tickets are $15 for one day, $25 for both days. Children 12 years and younger are admitted free (two per adult). A complete lineup of information is located at ArkLaTexComicCon.org.
