Putt for a Purpose to raise money for cancer treatments

- By Ashley Gardner

The Angel Fund Foundation Inc.'s second annual Putt for a Purpose fundraiser is at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 16 at Texarkana Country Club.

Drawdown tickets are $100 and include entry for one and a chance to win $4,000.

“It's a drawdown so that's always fun,” said Kim Glass, event chairman. “We are also doing a nine-hole fun putt. People will putt backward, with the wrong hand or with their eyes closed.”

Danny Maxey and the Barn Kats will provide musical entertainment for the first part of the evening, and a DJ will take over for the second half. There will also be a silent auction and door prizes.

Proceeds from the event go to the Angel Fund Foundation, which helps local cancer patients get treatment.

“We pay directly to the medical provider,” Glass said. “We pay for clinic visits, things like port placement surgery, pretty much anything associated with cancer treatment.”

The Angel Fund has helped 197 patients by paying for $210,000 in medical costs since its inception in June 2006 by cancer survivor Beth Morgan and her family.

“That money pretty much comes from private donations. We have a small grant from the Texarkana Area Community Foundation, but most of the money we're able to donate comes from this fundraiser or private donations,” Glass said.

The assistance to cancer patients can be pivotal, Glass said.

“It's life-changing because they're facing medical costs they can't pay for or treatment they can't receive because they can't fulfill a medical bill. They may not be able to get that certain drug they need or a treatment without our help.”

Drawdown tickets are available for purchase at Fowler Eye Care, Julie's Deli, The Open Window Boutique and Style Studio. More information can be found on the Angel Fund Foundation's Facebook page– facebook.com/angelfundfoundation.
