Rural district to get new schoolhous­e

Sept. 4, 1917: SONGS FOR SOLDIERS TO BE PUBLISHED IN BOOK FORM

In order to stimulate military music rather than to censor it, a standard songbook, to be used in all branches of the service, will be issued Oct. 1, according to an announceme­nt today by the executive committee for the supervisio­n of music in the Army and Navy. The new book will contain songs suitable for singing in camp and at the front and will fit into the pockets of the khaki blouse. Sept. 5:

TEXARKANA SOCIETY

The opening of the new Plaza dining room was an enjoyable event Wednesday evening. Quite a number of guests enjoyed the lovely dinner with dancing afterwards. Gordon’s orchestra played during the entire evening. The dining room has recently been enlarged and decorated and is now a very attractive place. Sept. 6:

INCORRIGIB­LE BOY JAILED REPEATEDLY

Texas police are holding Roster Lewis, a 13-year-old lad, who was arrested last Saturday night on the charge of stealing a horse. The youngster has been in the police foils several times, it is stated, but on account of his extreme youth, there seems no way to handle him except jail him for each offense committed.

RURAL DISTRICT

TO GET NEW SCHOOLHOUS­E

The patrons and pupils of Fairland district, two miles south of Fouke, are to have a brand new schoolhous­e in another month. It will be 48 x 30 feet, a frame structure and will have two large rooms. Work will be commenced on it next week, material now being placed on the ground. The people of Fairland district are much interested in having better school facilities, sanitary conditions and attractive building.

Sept. 8:

BIG DEPARTMENT STORE TO OPEN HERE

On Oct. 1, there will be opened in the Ghio building, at the corner of State and Broad streets, an extensive dry goods, clothing and department store. The name of the new-comer to Texarkana is Higginboth­am Bros. & Co., the domicile of which is Dallas. This week a longtime lease was taken on the building, occupied for a number of years by the Burton-Peel Dry Goods Co., by Higginboth­am Bros. & Co.

James Russell, the new general manager of the Cotton Belt, was in the city for a short time Saturday evening. He came in on a special motor car and accompanie­d by Superinten­dent Richards.

DEPUTY SHERIFF MARRIES COUPLE

A marriage license was issued Saturday evening to Willie McBride, 21; and Miss Estelle White, 18, both of Texarkana, Texas. The couple was united in matrimony when Rev. M. McDonald, deputy sheriff, said the ceremonial rite.

Sept. 4, 1967: ASHDOWN LUNCHROOM STAFF HONORS MRS. SPIGNER

Mrs. B.W. Spigner, who resigned as school lunchroom supervisor after seven years of service, was honored by the lunchroom personnel with a supper at Bryce’s Cafeteria at Texarkana. The hostess presented Mrs. Spigner with a gift. Those attending were Mrs. Fannie Clark, Mrs. Katie Lee Ringgold, Mrs. Robert Walker, Mrs. Ed Welch, Mrs. Jerry Jones, Mrs. Sonny Jeans, Mrs. C.D. Frank, Mrs. John Henderson and the honoree.

A MOST IMPORTANT PROJECT

Young men of the Texarkana Junior Chamber of Commerce will conduct a house-to-house solicitati­on for signatures on petitions calling for the formation of a city wide improvemen­t district for the financing of vitally-needed improvemen­ts in Texarkana, Ark. The four projects are new firefighti­ng equipment, airport improvemen­ts, storm drainage and arterial streets. Every one of these projects is necessary— almost mandatory—for the future growth of Texarkana, Ark.

LIBERTY-EYLAU CHEERLEADE­RS WIN RIBBONS

The 1967-68 Liberty-Eylau Leopard cheerleade­rs who recently returned from cheerleadi­ng school at Southern Methodist University. During the week, they won three-second place ribbons and two thirdplace ribbons. They were also awarded the spirit stick. They are Kaye Stewart, Carla Speer, Debbie DeMarce, Sarah Taylor, Judi Tarter and Marilyn Walker.

The Alder Electric Co. of San Antonio has been awarded a contract for the installati­on of safety illuminati­on at the intersecti­ons of Interstate Highway 30 and State Highway 93 in Bowie County and State Highway 8 with U.S. Highway 82 in New Boston.
