Arkansas High rolls over Camden Fairview, 30-14

- By Earl Gill

For the second straight week, Arkansas High's defense proved to be the backbone of this year's team.

Arkansas High rolled Camden Fairview on Friday night at Razorback Stadium, 30-14.

“We did some good things offensively,” Arkansas High head football coach Barry Norton said. “Drake Browning has done an exceptional job of guiding our offense for us.”

The first quarter was a backand-forth contest between defense but also who could commit less penalties.

There were more than 10 penalties committed by both teams in the first half.

“We tried not to do too much tonight,” Norton said. “We had to be careful with what all we did, being that we have so many guys banged up.”

“We didn't have a bunch of guys available tonight, but it's a process and we must keep growing.”

Arkansas High junior defender Cameron Collier returned a 75-yard blocked Cardinals field goal for the game's first score.

“We did poorly on the kick coverage side of our special team play but I'm extremely pleased with our big plays on special teams,” Norton said.

Cardinal gunslinger Keith Johnson was inconsistent passing in the first half, although his hard count was effective at the line of scrimmage.

Johnson caused three encroachment penalties on the Hog defense in the first half.

Johnson finished the night completing 11 passes on 33 attempts for 180 yards.

Arkansas High junior quarterback Drake Browning proved he could use his legs when the offense breaks down. Browning finished the game with 15 carries for 85 yards and 146 yards in

the air with a touchdown.

Hog speedster Irijah Price flipped the field for Arkansas High with his 80-yard reception to set up a Patrick Cook field goal in the second quarter.

Browning broke a 42-yard run to set up his 3-yard toss to Price in the endzone with 1:03 remaining in the second quarter.

Camden Fairview trailed Arkansas

High at half, 17-0.

The vigorous Hog defense only gave up two pass completions for 37 yards in the first half.

“We committed too many penalties,” Norton said. “We must eliminate the penalties before the ball is snapped. You can understand the aggressive penalties but the procedural penalties are things we can't control.”

Cardinal senior wideout Dalvonte Lewis burned the Hogs special teams for a 95-yard kickoff return to begin the third quarter.

Price sped to the end-zone for AHS from 8-yards out with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter.

Price continued to impose his will on the Cardinal defenders, returning a punt 50-yards to be negated by a Razorback blocking in the back penalty with 2:05 remaining in the third quarter.

Price finished with five snags for 137 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for twice for 11 yards and a touchdown.

“Irijah is a really gifted kid,” Norton said. “He has a really high ceiling and he's not there yet, so that's exciting to know that. We moved him to different spots tonight but he's going to have to play multiple positions for us. He's one of the guys, we have to get the ball in his hands.”

Arkansas High ball-hawking defensive back Cameron Harris intercepted a Camden Fairview pass for a 17-yard touchdown return with 10:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.

“We didn't play with the same intensity that we practiced throughout the week with,” Norton said. “We have to continue to get quality reps in practice and get better each day.”

Hog defender Tyree Black intercepted a Camden Fairview pass with 1:00 remaining in the fourth to seal the victory for Arkansas High.

“We have a heckuva challenge ahead of us,” Norton said. “Greenwood has been as good as anybody in the state of Arkansas the past couple of years. If you're going to be the best, you have to beat the best.”

“We have them at home and if we play lights-out, we have a chance to win.”

The Razorbacks begin conference play Friday, hosting juggernaut Greenwood at Razorback Stadium, beginning at 7 p.m.
