From Eskimo Brothers to MJ tribute, there’s live music aplenty

- By Aaron Brand

Whether it’s indie rock, rockabilly, dance music or a tribute show to the King of Pop himself, there’s a veritable plethora of live music coming up in the Texarkana area.

Local venues have it all going on, and here’s a rundown of just some of what’s what in the upcoming weeks:

Danny Maxey and the Barncats at Pop’s Place tonight, 7:30 p.m. Pop’s Place has super ambiance on the patio outdoors and, thus, it’s a perfect place to wind down after the work week and listen to acoustic live music.

JB and the Moonshine Band and Radio Birds at Scottie’s Grill on Saturday night. The tight-knit band of buddies and East Texas quartet known as JB and the Moonshine Band have found Texas music chart success with drinking tunes and more in recent years. They’ve toured all over but hail from good ‘ol Tyler, Texas. Radio Birds are a rock outfit from Atlanta, Ga.

Deer Darla, The Sweet Nothings and Joseph Moorhead at The Arrow Bar on Saturday night. The ever-changing local indie rock landscape has a new band in town with Deer Darla, pooling the talents of some excellent local musicians. Joseph Moorhead and local jam rockers The Sweet Nothings fill this sweet bill of homegrown grooves.

Nefarious Character, Numwa and Tap Dead Sinner at Stages Texarkana on Saturday night. Heavy hard rock from Texarkana and Shreveport presented by the busy folks at DMO Society and Music Lovers Texarkana and Beyond, who’ve been heavily promoting local music lately.

n Hubcap & the Loose Nuts tonight and Lady Chazz & the Tramps Saturday night at Fat Jack’s Oyster and Sports Bar. With band member nicknames like Wichita, The Punisher and The Cajun Kid, Hubcap & the Loose Nuts bring you East Texas-flavored blues music. The award-winning East Texas band Lady Chazz & the Tramps have won kudos for their R&B and soul, but they can play it all, from rock to pop and more, and they return for another Jack’s show.

Merrows and Spotlight Karaoke at Stages on Sept. 28. Punk powerhouse Merrows puts on quite a wild show and soon bring their frenetic energy to Stages. They call themselves “drunk punk” and that’s apt. Karaoke follows for the post-punk wind-down.

Eskimo Brothers at Fat Jack’s and Mike and the Moonpies at Scottie’s on Sept. 29. Honky-tonk rockabilly with the Eskimos bros on the one hand and with Austin, Texas-based outlaw country and Americana on the other hand.

Get your dancing shoes on for an all-night dance party at Stages Texarkana with a triple bill of Chat Room, GDASH and Qwilla. Homegrown electronic dance music and the DJ sets of a Nashville, Tenn.-based musician meet in this night where you can get the vibe on at Stages.

Canaan, Sylo and Deer Darla at Stages

on Oct. 7 with the Turnpike Troubadours the same day at Scottie’s Grill. Swamp boogie masters Canaan return to the local rock landscape with this show.

BrightStar Theaters has the Michael Jackson Tribute Light Show on Oct. 6 and a Freaky Friday 13th Special with From Parts Unknown, Merrows, Grizzly Sharks and All American Freak Show on, you guessed it, Oct. 13. A top Michael Jackson tribute artist comes to BrightStar for one show, while an eclectic night of rock and fantastical freak show thrills arrive at BrightStar for another.

Lucas Hoge headlines Jeans & Bling on Oct. 14 this year at the Texarkana Convention Center. He’s a Cabela’s Country Music Ambassador.

Late in October, Music City Texas Theater hosts its next show with Jake Worthington, who was a runner-up on the sixth season of “The Voice,” on Oct. 28. The award-winning Worthington and his traditional country sounds hail from La Porte, Texas.
