LAST WEEK: RB Chris Sutton rushed 3 yards to the end zone in double overtime to lift the Tigers to a 44-41 win over Kilgore.

THIS WEEK: Texas High opens District 16-5A play at home against Marshall. OFFENSIVE STANDOUTS: Sutton rushed 21 times for 116 yards and two scores; WR Tevailance Hunt had three TD receptions and ran 9 yards for another score; and QB Coltin Clack rushed for 72 yards and connected on 21 of 36 passes for 243 yards and two TDs. WR Chris Lyles also threw a touchdown to Hunt, who had scoring receptions of 43, 43 (from Lyles) and 17. PK Logan Snell also had five PATs and a field goal.

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS: LB Daveon Williams led the Texas High defense with nine tackles, DE DeJonte Harper and LB Chris Arnold added seven each, and S Marquavious Fisher had six. The Tigers limited the Bulldogs, who were averaging over 500 yards rushing per game, to 51 carries for 370 yards.

COACH GERRY STANFORD’S COMMENTS: “We knew coming in Kilgore was tough offensively, and we’ve seen four different offenses in four games. They were averaging 500 yards rushing, and this was the best team we’ve seen to date. Their team speed is tremendous, and our kids got settled into the game; they stayed the course and we saw drastic improvements on offense, again.

“We rotated guys in on defense, trying to stay fresh, and we had some kids step up for us. Over the course of the game, we had kids make some plays.

“Overtime is something that we practice every week, and we worked on it back in the spring everyday. Since we got into fall camp, we have worked an overtime period each week in practice, and since we’ve worked on that scenario it helped the kids when we got into that situation. They weren’t freaking out or letting their emotions get the best of them; they knew what to expect.”
