DeKalb takes on Daingerfield
DAINGERFIELD, Texas— There won’t be anyone hiding behind the curtain when DeKalb visits Daingerfield tonight.
Bears head coach Eddy May and DeKalb (5-1, 2-0) face off against head coach Mike Waldie and the Tigers (2-3, 1-0) in a District 7-3A clash at Mickey Mayne Tiger Stadium at 7:30 p.m.
Daingerfield is coming off a 55-7 win over Paul Pewitt, while DeKalb defeated Ore City last week, 54-50.
JaQuan Jackson has already piled up 1,930 yards on 192 carries for an average of 10.1 yards per touch for the Bears. Jackson has scored a total of 220 points.
“JaQuan (Jackson) is the real deal,” May said. “But it is a team effort, and I am very pleased with how the offense has been playing.”
The Bears average 46.3 points and give up 35.0 points per game, while Daingerfield scores 32.6 on averages and gives up 21.4 points.
Through Coach Waldie’s career, he has tried to stop Adrian Peterson, LaMichael James, Ryan Mallett, and Patrick Mahomes.
“Here in Northeast Texas, I have gotten to play against some future NFL kids and some great players,” Waldie said. “One thing I have never done is face a kid that is leading the nation—not the state—but the nation in rushing. I don’t think I could run up those kind of numbers on an X-box. I heard that he is a wonderful kid, and we are excited about the challenge.
“If anyone within shouting distance wants to see the leading rusher in the nation and our great defense, they need to come out and see who wins.”
Reggie Jeter leads the Tigers
with 360 yards on 60 carries for an average of 6.0 yards per tote and six touchdowns.
“Daingerfield put it together on both sides of the ball against Pewitt,” May said. “They will try to run the ball against us, and they have a great quarterback who can throw or run. It’s going to be a good game. We are prepared and offensively we think we can move the ball.”
The Tigers have limited opponents to 232.6 yards per game on defense and average 327.0 yards. DeKalb is second in the area with 475.3 yards per game on average.
“We feel like if we win this game, we will clinch a playoff spot,” May said. “The kids are going to get after it, plays as hard as they can, and we’ll see the outcome.”
Each coach is looking to keep the momentum going after district wins last week.
“We want to play like we did against Paul Pewitt,” Waldie said. “When we play to the best of our abilities, we are a tough out. I was proud to see the kids relax and just play hard last week. DeKalb is well coached, and it’s a big game.”
