Texas High at Greenville

-

TEAMS: Texas High (4-3, 2-1) at Greenville (5-2, 2-1) KICKOFF: 7:30 p.m., T.A. Cotton Ford Stadium.

LAST WEEK: The Tigers romped Mount Pleasant, 48-0, and the Lions fell to District 16-5A front-runner Marshall, 56-14. LAST YEAR: Texas High earned a 45-19 victory over Greenville.

GAME FACTS: The winner of this game climbs into a tie with Pine Tree for second place behind the Mavs with two weeks remaining in the regular season. Marshall has yet to have its open date. Lions head coach Darren Duke is in his second stint at Greenville, serving as an assistant coach from 1993-2001 and defensive coordinator the four previous years. Duke was promoted after Marvin Sedberry retired in January after 42 years of coaching. Greenville averages 29.1 points and gives up 27.4 per game, and the Tigers are scoring 29.4 and allowing 21.6 a game. COACHES’ COMMENTS: Texas High’s Gerry Stanford—“The biggest thing for teams who are trying to improve is, can you win in the months of October and November. Right now, we're looking to play our best football this month and continue to improve. We've seen improvement each week, and so we're looking for the same things this week with the big road test.

“Greenville is real sound on defense.

They know their schemes and stick with their assignments; their kids just do their jobs. Offensively, they've got a quarterback who leads them. He's real consistent week in and week out of running their offense.”

Greenville’s Duke—“We're real excited to be playing well again; we've been down for a little bit, and we're definitely playing better. This is going to be another great Texas High team coming in here. Marshall is a good team, and a lot things happened bad for us last week. We didn't get a chance to go out and compete, and so we're ready to get out there and correct some of those things against a quality opponent.

“We consider Texas High among the top two teams in the district, and we're excited to be able to use them as a measuring stick and just see how good we can play.”
