Lady Hawks sweep Mabank
LONGVIEW, Texas—Pleasant Grove borrowed the witch’s broom on Halloween.
The Lady Hawks swept Mabank, 25-20, 25-19, 25-22, in a Class 4A bi-district playoff volleyball match Tuesday at Pine Tree High School’s Pirate Center.
“It was a good job,” Pleasant Grove head coach Amy Collvins said. “We had some new players out there, and for us to go 3-0 is exactly what a coach wants to see right now.
The Hawks (25-12) will take on Bullard in a Class 4A area round playoff match Thursday.
Macey Adams put down 16 kills, Britton Anderson had 11 kills and 12 digs, and Sydney Hopkins paced Pleasant Grove with 16 service points and added 10 digs.
Madeline Haak took the service line and forced two serve receive errors to make it 5-1 in the first set for Pleasant Grove.
Later in the set, Allison Michaelis served in three points, and during her service, Anderson and Natalie Hale combined for a block, and Madi Morris put down a kill along the left baseline to make it 20-14.
The Hawks never trailed in the first set, and Adams hammered a kill to put the set away.
Mabank watched a 9-5 lead disappear in the second set as Sydney Hopkins served in five straight to give the Hawks an 11-9 lead. During her service, the Panthers committed four unforced hitting errors.
Two points later, Adams put down three consecutive kills to make it 14-11 in favor of PG.
The Hawks built a 24-16 lead and clinched the second set when Morris spun a kill down the right, center part of the floor.
Set three was the closest of the match. Mabank built a 6-3 early lead, but PG came back to tie it at 8-all. The set was tied at 3,8, 9, 10, 11, 16, and 18 before the Hawks built a 21-18 lead behind the service of Hopkins.
Hopkins slapped in four straight, and during her serve, Morris had a block, Haak had a kill, and Hopkins caused a serve receive error. Fittingly, senior Anderson put down the last point of the match on a blazing kill down the left baseline.
