Police believe body found in creek is man missing since early September
Officers found Carmeli’s ID; the father, 42, was last seen at soccer practice
Texarkana, Texas, Police Department believes a body found Monday morning in Swampoodle Creek is that of Anthony Carmeli, a man who went missing Sept. 11.
“We found identification on the body that leads us to believe this is Anthony Carmeli,” said Shawn Vaughn, TTPD spokesman. “The body is being sent to Dallas for an autopsy which we hope will provide some information in terms of how long Mr. Carmeli had been deceased as well as the manner of death and what happened.”
Preliminary autopsy results may be available within a few days while other tests such as toxicology tests may take weeks.
“We have been investigating this as a missing person and the case has shifted to a deceased person investigation and we’re trying to look into it and find out what happened,” Vaughn said.
The body was spotted Monday morning by two men walking near Third and Elm streets in Texarkana.
“We got a call from two men walking in the area who found the body in the creek,” he said. “Not knowing what happened, we treat all dead bodies as a homicide until proven otherwise.”
TTPD officers wore protective suits as they as they worked the scene looking for clues.
Carmeli walked away from his children’s soccer practice Sept. 11 around the 1500 block of Pine Street after reportedly asking another parent to watch his children while he “took care of something.”
He was 42 years old at the time of his disappearance.
