Local stylists offer free haircuts to those in need

- By Ashley Gardner

It was a party atmosphere during Haircuts for My Homies Monday morning at the pocket park in downtown Texarkana. People in need received free haircuts, a hot meal, free clothing, blankets and more.

Lisa Harris, owner of the Style Studio, and Sarah Fuglaar helped organize the event.

“There are 21 stylists working the event and we’ll give well over 100 haircuts. We did at least 50 haircuts in the first 30 minutes,” Harris said.

The band GrislyShark provided entertainment while about 100 people milled around eating pizza and looking at clothing available for give-away.

Tomequri Snowden stood by as her 2-year-old daughter Aaziyah Snowden got a haircut.

“I’m getting her hair did professionally because her sister cut her hair awhile back,” Snowden said.

“I think this is a great event. It helps people get together. People are walking around here, talking, eating and laughing. It feels loving and with all the things going on recently that’s important. It’s a blessing for sure. It’s definitely been a blessing to me and my family,” she said.

Later in the afternoon Harris

said the event was a complete success. “In the end it was awesome. We pretty much were able to give away 75 percent of everything we brought down there. The rest we took to Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter, the Texarkana Friendship Center and the Salvation Army.” The event wouldn’t be possible without help from many businesses and groups in the community.

“We definitely could not have done it without all the local businesses, volunteers and people in the community who donated everything for us to make it possible,” Harris said. “The people were so thankful. They just kept thanking us over and over and telling us how great it was that we were there doing that for them.”

This is the Style Studio’s third annual Haircuts for my Homies.

“Each year has just grown bigger and better. Last year it rained the entire day of the event but we still carried on. This year the weather was very nice and we had more people than we’ve ever had,” Harris said.
