Vandals hit new Texas high school
100 years ago Nov. 20, 1917: MISS WILSON CHARMED A VAST AUDIENCE AT GRAND OLD OPERA LAST NIGHT
The auditorium and balconies of the Grand Opera House were filled to capacity to greet Miss Margaret Woodrow Wilson in her first appearance in the city. With a two-fold purpose, the audience has assembled to honor the daughter of the greatest president the U.S. has ever had, and to administer to the cause in which she is devoting her time and talents. She is possessed of a soft, pleasing lyric soprano voice, and her stage bearing is perfect. All the money made during the concert will go to the Red Cross Chapter, to help families struggling during the war. Many in the crowd said they had been looking forward to meeting her for a while now.
Nov. 21: PEOPLE IN THE NEWS
Rev. A.T. Walker of the Hardy Memorial church united in marriage Sunday afternoon Mr. Millard Walker and Miss Mary Grant. They will reside in Texarkana.
Marjorie Mitchell’s little friends will be pleased to know that she is recovering nicely from her recent operation at the home of her grandmother, Mrs. Daines, Seventh and Waterall streets.
Nov. 22: SANDERS STORE NO. 1 AS FINE AS CAN BE FOUND IN THE COUNTRY
All that can be done in the way of working for absolute sanitation, efficiency in the handling customers are giving to Texarkana a store that is absolutely on a par with any retail grocery store in the larger cities, and far ahead of many cities of the same site as Texarkana, has been accomplished at the new Sanders No. 1 store in the Benefield building at West Broad and Maple streets, the formal opening of which was held Thursday of this week.
Nov. 23: PAVEMENT PICK-UPS
On account of the scarcity of young men or boys as caddies, the sport of golfing is being denied, in a measure, to the fans at the Country Club. Instructor Akin often is put to his wits to supply the deficiency. ALSO- News has been received here of the marriage, in Little Rock last Sunday, of Mrs. Myrtle Malcolm, of this city, to Mazie Moon, a well-known young man of the capitol city. Mr. and Mrs. Moon, with little Myrtie, daughter of the later, will make their home in Little Rock.
Nov. 24: RURAL SCHOOL BURNS TO THE GROUND, IS TOTAL LOSS
Mrs. Mary Lou McCurry, the teacher, reports destruction of school building in GENOA. Miller county rural school district appear to the especial object of instruction at the hands of the fire fiend. During the past year, three rural school buildings have been mysteriously destroyed by fire, the origin of which has not yet been determined in any case. School will be held in the Baptist church at Genoa until such time as a new building for school purposes can be erected.
Nov. 25: PROPOSED ORDINANCE TO BAR PEDDLERS, BEGGARS AND MEDICINE VENDORS
City Attorney Brown, of the Texas side, has in course of preparation of ordinance that will, if passed by the City Council, bar from the streets of the city all medicine shows, vendors and various wares, peddlers of any kind and itinerant beggars and solicitors for various kinds of publication.
Nov. 26: NO OBJECTIONS MADE TO SCHOOL UNIFORMS
The Texas high school girls are faithful in wearing their uniforms. As far as known there has been not a single objection to wearing it, from either parents or students. It is said that in a number of other towns, they are in favor of uniforms for the high school girls, but before adopting it will watch how it tries out in Texarkana.
50 years ago Nov. 20, 1967: CAST FROM ‘YUM YUM TREE’
Gail Reagan has announced the cast for the production of “The Yum Yum Tree” to be presented by the Thexarkana Little Theater, Nov. 28, 29, and 30 at the Arkansas Municipal Auditorium. The cast is made up of Mary Sue Sanders (Irene), mark Blonstein (Dave), Danny Sklar (Hogan), James Tennison (cab driver and Milkman), and Carolun Province (Robin).
Nov. 21: VANDALS HIT NEW TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL
Vandals struck at the new Texas Senior High School building Sunday night causing extensive damage. Charlie Campbell of the Texas City police said that several plate glass windows leading to the various offices were broken, and water and chemicals from the fire extinguishers were sprayed on the curtains in the auditorium, other damage was done also. A school board member said Monday that the damage caused by vandalism at the school was not covered by insurance. There is $100.00 reward for any information about the crime.
Nov. 22: SWEETHEART OF CROSS HALL
Michelle Andrews, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Andrews of No. 8 Pine View Drive Texarkana has been chosen sweetheart of Cross Hall, men’s dormitory at Southern State College. Magnolia, ark. Miss Andrews is a 1967 graduate of Liberty-Eylau high school and is a freshman biology major at southern state, where she is preparing to go into the field of medicine. She was also selected as a homecoming maid at the college this fall.
Nov. 23: DEATH TOLL CLIMBS TO MORE THAN 100 TRAFFIC DEATHS
More than 100 traffic deaths were recorded Thursday as the nation moved through the first day of the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. The period ends at midnight Sunday. Last year there were 748 traffic fatalities during the 102 hour Thanksgiving period, a record for any holiday. The smallest number of traffic deaths for Thanksgiving weekend in recent years was 442 in 1960.
Nov. 24: JANA LEIGH ATCHISON HONORED ON BIRTHDAY
Jana Leigh Atchison was honored on her seventh birthday with a patio party at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. William E. Atchison. Nov. 25: TEXARKANA TITANS TO TAKE ON SAN ANTONIO TOROS
The Texarkana Titans have accepted an offer from the San Antonio Toros of the Texas Professional Football League, to play the Toros on Sunday, Dec. 17, in San Antonio. San Antonio won the Western Division of the Texas League. The Titans won the Southern Football League championship with a 10-1 record, losing only to Shreveport. Club officials for both teams will meet today to finalize plans for the game.
Nov. 26: FARM FAMILY OF THE YEAR HONORED
Mr. and Mrs. Sam Dean and their two children, Eric, 9, and Tracey, 3, received a plaque from J.Q. Mahaffey, executive editor of the Texarkana Gazette and Daily News, in recognition of their having been chosen the Miller County Farm Family of the Year. They have an attractive home in Homan. The Farm Family of the Year is sponsored jointly in Miller County by the Arkansas Power and Light Company and the Texarkana newspapers.
