Neighborhood center to hold garage sale

- By Ashley Gardner

Bridging the Gaps of Arkansas' Sandflat Neighborhood Center is having a garage sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday inside the facility at 209 E. 14th St., Texarkana, Ark.

Booth space is available for $15. There will also be Christmas wreaths auctioned off, BBQ sandwiches, fresh tea cakes and more.

Proceeds from the event benefit the senior program.

“We don't have any outside funding … so basically we need the money to be able to provide programs or activities for our seniors,” said Barbara Pitts, who volunteers as managing partner at the center.

Sandflat has activities for seniors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday. Thanks to a partnership with Meals on Wheels senior citizens are provided a meal as part of the program.

“You should hear their testimony. When the center was closed before, these people went into a state of depression. They didn't have a social life other than if they went to church. This program really changes their lifestyle. They look forward to coming here and engaging. Since we started doing meals one lady who attends has gained 10 pounds. Her doctors had been worried about her,” Pitts said.

On average 12 to 15 people attend senior activities each day but between 35 and 40 are registered.

Pitts hopes to raise $1,000 to $1,500 with the garage sale.

“Several people have brought us clothes to put in the garage sale. This is our first effort at fundraising since Bridging the Gaps of Arkansas has been at Sandflat,” Pitts said.

Donations for the garage sale or financial contributions are welcomed and can be dropped off at the center. For more information call Pitts at 903-908-9754.
