Splendid plays on display on Day 1

REDWATER, Texas—Super plays and great shots flooded the gym.

There were many spectacula­r plays during the first day of the Redwater Invitation­al basketball tournament Thursday.

Victorious on the girls’ side were Redwater, who won two games, McLeod, Linden-Kildare, and Bloomburg. Ore City and Bloomburg, who played two games, each lost one game. Avery and Hooks lost two games.

Winners on the boys’ side included James Bowie, Linden-Kildare, and Genoa Central. Redwater, James Bowie, who played two games, and Bloomburg each lost a game.

Ebbony Cobbins, who scored 30 for Paul Pewitt, and Avery’s Jill Whitney, who had a 23-point game, were the top two leading scorers on the girls’ side.

Redwater’s Parker Gravitt along with James Bowie’s Jonathan Cody tied for top boys’ scorer with 19 points apiece.

GIRLS Redwater 58, Ore City 28

The Lady Dragons built a 37-9 halftime lead and outscored the Lady Rebels in every quarter.

Karlee Carmony had a gamehigh 18 points for Redwater, while teammate Bethanee Calicott scored 11.

Cassie Gabaldon had the hot hand for Ore City as she scored 10.

McLeod 52, Bloomburg 42

Selena Moon lit up the nets for 13 points to lead the Lady Longhorns to victory.

Shelby Davis scored 12, and teammate Jillian Ellis added 11 for McLeod.

Haylee Campbell had a gamehigh 17 points for the Lady Wildcats. Bloomburg’s Erin Evans helped out with 11 points.

Linden-Kildare 40, Avery 33

The Lady Tigers came back on the Lady Bulldogs after Avery had taken a 31-26 lead after three quarters.

Avery outscored LindenKild­are in each quarter but the fourth in which the Tigers put up 14 to the Bulldogs’ two.

Siarra Johnson, who connected on three treys, led all scorers with 13 points for L-K, and teammate Jaimye Gaston added 10.

Whitney lit up the scoreboard for 11 points, and teammate Cassidy Kelsoe helped out with 10 for Avery.

Paul Pewitt 68, Hooks 20

Cobbins kept the scorekeepe­r busy as she poured in a game-high 30 points as the Lady Brahmas rolled past a young Lady Hornets squad.

Dede Jones helped out with 10 points for Paul Pewitt.

Kayla Laffeyette, who hit a trio of 3-pointers, finished with 11 points for Hooks.

Redwater 54, Avery 43

Haley Latham, who sunk three 3-pointers, led the Dragons to the victory with 14 points. Teammate Carmony scored 13 points.

Whitney scorched the nets for a gamehigh 23 points for the Bulldogs.

Bloomburg 52, Hooks 15

Hanna Parker paced the Wildcats with 18 points to seal the win.

Haylee Campbell and Evans each scored 10 points for Bloomburg.

Reagan Reiter led a young Hooks team with four points.

BOYS James Bowie 39, Bloomburg 27

The Pirates built an 18-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. James Bowie’s defense shackled the Wildcats in the fourth and held them scoreless.

Cody poured in 15 points for the Pirates, while teammate Landon Crawford lit up the nets for 13.

Conner Hooker paced Bloomburg with a team-high 13 points.

Linden-Kildare 46, Redwater 38

Jekevian Rose shot in 17 points to lead the Tigers over the host Dragons.

Ty Patterson contribute­d 14 for LindenKild­are.

Gravitt had a game-high 19 points for Redwater.

Genoa Central 51, James Bowie 33

Kohen McCoy scored a team-high 17 points for the Dragons, and Genoa Central earned the win.

The Dragons outscored the Pirates in each quarter. Colby Cobb helped out with 13 for Genoa Central.

James Bowie’s Cody lit up the nets for a game-high 19 points.
