First round features lopsided results for both boys, girls

NEW BOSTON, Texas—It was a day of lop-sided scores, despite many games being competitiv­e.

The annual Gunslinger Tournament kicked off with the lowest margin of victory 11 points by Liberty-Eylau’s boys, who pulled away from Clarksvill­e in the fourth quarter. The largest margin of victory was 36 points followed by 33, which happened twice in the boys division. Pleasant Grove bested Daingerfie­ld, 75-42, and Paris topped the host Lions, 68-35. In the other boys game, Hope beat the L-E junior varsity, 52-34.

On the girls’ side, no result was closer than 20 points—Fouke over New Boston, 63-43. The Lady Leopards beat Hope, 69-33, while PG and Arkansas High picked up wins against junior varsity teams. The Lady Hawks topped Texas High’s junior varsity, 62-37, and the Lady Backs won over the Leopard JV, 51-27.

In today’s boys games, PG and L-E play the early semifinal at 1:30 p.m., and Hope and Paris meet at 8 in the other semifinal. In the consolatio­n games, Daingerfie­ld and Clarksvill­e play at 10:30 a.m., and New Boston and L-E’s jayvee meet at 5.

In today’s girls games, Pleasant Grove and Arkansas High meet at noon in a semifinal, and Liberty-Eylau and Fouke clash at 6:30 p.m. in the other semifinal. In consolatio­n games, Texas High’s jayvee and L-E’s junior

varsity play at 9 a.m., and Hope and New Boston tussle at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS DIVISION Pleasant Grove 62, Texas High JV 37

The Lady Hawks extended a 9-point lead from the first quarter to 22 points at intermissi­on against the Texas High junior varsity.

Madeline Haak scorched the nets for 23 points for Pleasant Grove, and Sha’Nequa Henry and Monique Walker chipped in with 16 points apiece.

Zay Webb led the Lady Tigers with 12 points.

Arkansas High 51, Liberty-Eylau JV 27

The Lady Backs built a 30-15 lead in the first half and cruised past the Lady Leopard junior varsity.

Kiara Young led Arkansas High with 15 points, and Tierra Holliman added 11 with a pair of 3-pointers.

Kurstyne Bailey scored seven for the L-E jayvee, and Tamara Norris contribute­d six points.

Liberty-Eylau 69, Hope 33

The Lady Leopards built an 18-point cushion in the first half and had a pair of players combine for 45 points in a rout of the Lady Cats.

Taylor Crabtree paced Liberty-Eylau with 25 points, and Skylier Bailey chipped in with 20 points.

Ranayzia Miller and Lanay Wheaton had eight points each for Hope.

Fouke 63, New Boston 43

The Lady Panthers used an 11-point swing in the second quarter to propel them to victory.

Hannah Mauldin scored 19 for Fouke, Lakyn Smallwood chipped in with 18 and Taylor Hardin had 16 and nailed five 3-pointers.

Carleigh Reeves scored nine points for the Lady Lions, and Hailee Nero added eight.

BOYS DIVISION Pleasant Grove 75, Daingerfie­ld 42

Three Hawks scored in double figures, and PG cruised past the Tigers.

Noah Fawbush led Pleasant Grove with 18 points, Braxton Watkins poured in 16 and Kamren Woods added 12 points.

Michael Reeves led Daingerfie­ld with 12 points.

# Liberty-Eylau 50, Clarksvill­e 39

Decorian Phillips, in his first action since football season ended for LibertyEyl­au last week, poured in 23 points—10 in the fourth quarter—as the Leopards pulled away from the Blue Tigers in the fourth period.

Daveonchia Meadows added nine for L-E, which was tied 26-all after three but scored the first nine points of the fourth.

Deionte Tavie led Clarksvill­e with 16 points, and Quay Scales added eight.

Hope 52, Liberty-Eylau JV 34

The Bobcats turned a 6-point halftime lead and pulled away in the second half with help fro Jaylon Conway, who poured in all 20 of his points in the second half.

Keith Brown added 15 and Chris Moore finished with 11 for Hope.

The Leopards’ Takylan Hampton scored a team-high eight points, and two other teammates had six each.

Paris 68, New Boston 35

The Wildcats built a 13-point lead by halftime and doubled their advantage in the third quarter.

Cameron Jones scored 14 points for Paris, Jordan Mitchell added 11 and Treyvon Dennis had 10.

Deaundre Robinson led the Lions with nine points, Ja’Veon Brown added eight and Jamin Powell had seven.
