Six apply for medical marijuana licenses
Six medical marijuana businesses have applied to operate in Miller County, Ark., including four within the Texarkana city limits.
Those six license applications are among 16 submitted to the Arkansas Medical Marijuana Commission by businesses that hope to open in Southwest Arkansas, documents show.
Two businesses seek to operate medical marijuana dispensaries in Miller County, city unspecified; three to operate dispensaries in Texarkana; and one to operate a cultivation center in the city.
Five other potential dispensaries and six other potential cultivators have applied to operate in the MMC’s Zone 8, a 14-county region of Southwest Arkansas that includes Miller County. Zone 8 counties are: Calhoun, Clark, Columbia, Dallas, Hempstead, Howard, Lafayette, Little River, Miller, Nevada, Ouachita, Pike, Sevier and Union.
The MMC is evaluating applications and will award up to five cultivation center licenses statewide and four dispensary licenses in each of eight geographic zones. Cultivation centers will grow cannabis, and dispensaries will sell it to medically qualified consumers.
On Thursday, the MMC released the first, “general information” section of all 230 license applications for dispensaries and cultivation centers it has received. The release comes as a response to document requests the MMC has received under state freedom of information law, including one from the Gazette.
Information released includes basic facts about the applying businesses, including any names they operate under; where, when and by whom they were incorporated; and whether they are involved with any other MMC applications. They list the counties and, in some cases, the cities where the businesses propose to operate.
MMC staff redacted individuals’ names from the documents in an effort to eliminate favoritism in the application evaluation process. Names of corporate officers, however, are separately available in the public record.
