Fireworks

Be careful with your New Year’s celebrations

-

With Christmas behind us and New Year’s Eve just a days away, the thoughts of many in Texarkana and the surrounding area are turning to one thing: fireworks.

Young and old alike get bitten by the fireworks bug this time of year. It’s easy to see why. The loud noise and bright lights that go with any fireworks display just make any holiday more festive.

And it’s a lot more fun when you set them off for yourself.

There are a lot of fireworks to choose from. From firecrackers to bottle rockets, sparklers to Roman candles, whistlers and chasers, up to large pyrotechnic rockets capable of lighting up the sky.

All can be a lot of fun. But all pose risks. Every year, thousands of people are injured in fireworks-related accidents. Most were relatively minor. But some are serious. A few even fatal.

Fireworks are fun. But they should also be treated with respect.

The National Council on Fireworks Safety offers these tips for a safe New Year’s fireworks celebration: Use fireworks outdoors only. Obey local laws. If fireworks are not legal where you live, do not use them. Always have water handy. (A hose or bucket). Only use fireworks as intended. Don’t try to alter them or combine them.

Never relight a “dud” firework. Wait 20 minutes and then soak it in a bucket of water.

Use common sense. Spectators should keep a safe distance from the shooter, and the shooter should wear safety glasses.

Alcohol and fireworks do not mix. Have a “designated shooter.”

Only those over the age of 12 should be allowed to handle sparklers of any type.

Do not ever use homemade fireworks of illegal explosives. They can kill you! Report illegal explosives to the fire or police department in your community. Enjoy your celebration. Just remember to play it safe. Another thing: Setting off fireworks is illegal within the city limits of both Texarkanas.

It can also be upsetting for some individuals suffering from PTSD. Pets can become agitated by fireworks as well.

We encourage you to obey the law and be a good neighbor.
