Hawks overcome slow start to beat Atlanta

A big second half led to a win. Pleasant Grove outscored Atlanta, 37-22 in the second half, en route to a 62-44, District 14-4A win at Hawk Gym Friday.

“We came out in the second half and played a lot better than we did in the first half,” Hawk head coach Billy Brewer said. “Atlanta did good in the first half in making us play to their tempo. Our tempo of the game is run and gun.

“We used the press in the second half and kind of wore them down. We are blessed to have great talent on the floor and on the bench. Both groups did really well for us. I think its coming together.”

After Griffin Young hit a shot from 3-point land, Xavier Benson made a big slam dunk to ignite the crowd. Atlanta held a 12-8 lead after the first quarter.

Pleasant Grove got the better of the Rabbits in the second quarter, as they outscored them 17-10. The second quarter ended on a 3-point shot by Hawk guard Luke Harmon.

PG went into the locker room with a 25-22 lead.

The Hawks come out in the third quarter with the press that led to six Atlanta turnovers in the quarter. PG outscored the Rabbits, 17-8, as they converted turnovers into points.

Seven different Hawk players scored in the final quarter as Pleasant Grove outscored Atlanta 20-14 to earn the win.

Kameron Woods had a teamhigh 13 points for the Hawks, while teammate Benson had 10 points.

Landon Jackson scored four points and pulled down 10 rebounds for PG.

Charlie Powell poured in a gamehigh 17 points for the Rabbits.

Pleasant Grove improves to 18-4 and remains perfect in district, 5-0.
