- By Ashley Gardner

Altrusa International of Texarkana, Texas, is having a Living WELL Aware Conference at 9 a.m. Feb. 24 at Williams Memorial Methodist Church, Wesley Hall, 4000 Moores Lane, Texarkana, Texas.

Dr. Patricia Sulak, an Altrusan from Temple, Texas, and her husband Dr. Jeffrey Waxman will present an interactive conference for people who want to learn how to prevent disease through healthy living.

Sulak founded and directs Living Well Aware, a unique wellness program encompasses all aspects of a person’s health including emotional health and stress reduction. Her book and her keynote addresses and conferences cover the 11 essential

elements of health and happiness, empowering everyone to take ownership of their well-being and partner with their health care providers for optimal health.

Waxman, a nationally known, practicing pediatric urologist and medical school professor will speak from the male perspective on the topic of healthy living and will outline six areas of his life where he made dramatic improvements simply by changing his thinking and his habits.

“The first thing we’re going to do is set the stage for what’s happening with health in America,” Sulak said. “A lot of people aren’t aware life expectancy is going down in America. It’s not going up. In other industrialized countries it’s continuing to go up.”

Sulak said the rates of diabetes, depression, suicide, obesity and other health disorders are on the increase.

“These problems are mostly self-induced so we’re going to talk about all the things we’re doing to create self-induced disease. We’re going to talk about everything from the food we consume to what a lot of these conveniences have done to our lifestyle, making us physically inactive today. The CDC has stated that physical inactivity is becoming the number one cause of preventable death,” Sulak said. “We’ll talk about all the things we can do to prevent the dreaded Ds—diabetes, dementia, depression, disability and death. We’re also going to review the latest data on the prevention of cancer.”

“For people who attend, this conference is going to change how they live,” she said. “What we want to do is give the latest scientific information on disease prevention strictly through healthy living. … It doesn’t matter if you’re in the worst shape of your life or the best shape ever. I guarantee you everyone will take home several pearls that will help you get healthier,” Sulak said.

Tickets to the event are $65 and include lunch from Longhorn Steakhouse. Tickets are available from any Texarkana Altrusan and at Texarkana Digital Press, 2024 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana Ark. Seating is limited, and all tickets will be sold in advance. None will be sold at the door.

Proceeds benefit Altrusa, a local, volunteer, service club which is part of a global volunteer service organization. Their purpose is to promote better communities through service by a network of people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.

Organizers are hoping to raise $16,000 to $20,000 with the event. That money will be used to support local nonprofits and other programs chosen by Altrusa.

“Altrusa’s mission is to provide leadership and service for a better community. Having Dr. Sulak and Dr. Waxman here to provide their dynamic ideas and solutions that work for optimale health and wellness for all of us, only motivates us more and improves our community,” said Peggy Burson, member of Altrusa International of Texarkana, Texas. “Our mantra is making our community a better place to live.”
