PG looks to advance in playoffs against Van

- By Brian Tyl

LONGVIEW, Texas— Pleasant Grove is ready to take that first step.

The Lady Hawks, who finished second in District 14 -4A , take on Van, third place out of District 13-4A, today at 8 p.m. in a Class 4A bi-district girls playoff basketball game at Spring Hill High School.

“Van has good size, and they have two guards that are really solid,” Pleasant Grove head coach Jason Boston said. “Their coach, Jeff Sutton, is a very fundamental coach. They are a half-court, man-to-man team, and they do good things.”

Starting for the Hawks are senior center Monique Walker, senior forward Madeline Haak, junior forward Abby Hines, sophomore guard Sha’Nequa Henry, and sophomore guard Ashanti Levingston.

Coming off the bench for Pleasant Grove, players include freshman guard Macy Young, junior forward Don’Teshia Mixon, junior center Noni Hilley, and Phoebe Robertson.

“We take a little pause and look at the things that caused us some problems in the regular season,” Boston said. “It comes down to tak-

ing care of the basketball and rebounding. We have been shooting well, and we want to limit Van to just one shot on each possession.

“We want to take away some of their strengths, while we keep doing what made us successful during the season. Perimeter shooting will be key for us, and we have several players who have made 3-pointers this season.”

The winner will play either Bullard or Rusk in the area round.

The game will broadcast on the radio on KTRG 94.1 FM.
