Event aims to raise cancer research funds

Team Sumoas Relay for Life ninth annual March Masquerade takes place from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. March 10 at the Four States Fairgrounds.

Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner from Texas Roadhouse and entertainment by Chad Shuttles & Vernon Hinesley. A cash bar, raffles and more will be available.

Walker started the event in memory of her brother, Michael “Sumo” Sams, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 testicular cancer in March 2008 at age 29. He died in January 2009.

“This event is special to me because it was started in memory of my brother, but it’s grown bigger. I’ve met many special people fighting cancer through this event,” Walker said. “We recognize them at the event, and it’s a very emotional moment.”

The theme of this year’s event is “Come as you are … Cancer does not Discriminate.”

“A lot of times, people might not come because they don’t have anything to wear, so we wanted to change the dress code. Cancer doesn’t discriminate, so come as you are. Masks are not required, but they are encouraged,” said Barbara Walker, event founder. “I’m hoping we’ll have a bigger turnout. Also, my brother wasn’t the type to dress up.”

People fighting cancer and survivors get in for free, but they must RSVP by calling Walker at 870-571-8188.

Tickets are available at Cavender’s Boot City on Mall Drive or from any Team Sumoas team member.

“This is a fun event, but it’s also raising money for a great cause and giving back to our community,” Walker said. “Most of the money we raise goes to research for all types of cancer.

“That’s rewarding to know, because one in two women and one in three men will develop cancer in their lifetime.

“I think it’s important to know how far we’ve come because of early detection and advances in technology.”
