Kiwanis draw hungry crowd with pancake fundraiser
Three ingredients kept people flowing Saturday into Kiwanis Club of Texarkana’s 60th annual Pancake Day fundraiser—clear skies, mild temperatures and no rain.
An estimated 2,000 pancakestreamed into Texarkana College’s Truman Arnold Student Center from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect their own small stack of the syrupbreakfast—complete with scrambled egg, bacon and sausage trimmings.
Last year, the seven-hour event drew about 2,000 patrons, and from all indications, this year’s constant crowd didn’t disappoint, club
President Summer Mills said.
With this year’s numbers closely resembling last year’s intake, Mills estimated that this year’s fundraiser would possibly match the amount collected—about $22,000.
The money raised will go to support a number of charities, including KIDS Diabetes Camp, Special Olympics, Boy Scout Troops 3 and 86, the Literacy Council of Bowie and Miller Counties, Texarkana Resources for the Disabled, 1st Choice Pregnancy Resource Center, Runnin’ WJ Ranch, Challenged Outdoorsmen, Opportunities student scholarships, Klondike Leadership Academy, the Texarkana College Foundation, Watersprings Ranch and Court Appointed Special Advocates.
Funds raised will also go toward Partnerships for Pathways, Hospice of Texarkana, Randy Sams’ Outreach Shelter, The Salvation Army, Alzheimer’s Alliance, Temple Memorial Treatment Center, Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s Young Writer’s Program, Texarkana Baptist Children’s Home, Texas Ramp Project, Stuff the Bus, P.R.I.D.E Academy and Texarkana Museums System.
