Eagles sweep Wiley

- By Grant Minor

Texas A&M UniversityTexarkana swept Wiley College in a doubleheader Saturday, 3-1 and 7-1, at George Dobson Field in Spring Lake Park.

Bronson Butcher played a vital role in the Eagle’s game play as he went 3-4 in the two games with two singles, a double, an RBI, two runs scored, and two thrown outs as catcher.

Cade Thomason hit the only home run of either game, a solo to right in the third frame of game two, to break the ice and put Texas A&M Texarkana up 1-0.

“It was nice to see Cade Thomason hit one out,”said Eagle’s head coach Steve Jones. “We were a little better offensively the second game but still sort of feeling our oats a little bit there.

George Gugino, Chase Beebe, and Thomason all went 2-4; Gugino had a single and double, Beebe a single and a triple, and Thomason a single and the home run.

Evan Rogers claimed the win as the Eagle’s pitcher in game two, going eight innings and throwing 104 pitches with four strikeouts. Michael Herrera relieved Roger in the ninth inning to close out the game, throwing 11 pitches including two Ks.

“We have been very consistent with our pitching,”coach Jones said. “But our offense hasn’t come around, yet.

In the the third inning Butcher led off with a single to left field. After two outs, Gugino knocked one to the right for a double that allowed Butcher to score; Chase Beebe hit a sacrifice fly to bring Gugino home. 3-1 Eagles.

The fourth inning slammed the door on the Wildcats as Texas A&M Texarkana tacked on four more runs scored by Joe Pearlman, Cole Beckham, Keone McKee, and Butcher.

Wiley College’s only run came in the sixth inning when Tyler Bauman hit a single down the right side to bring home Ruben Hancock; 7-1, Texas A&M Texarkana.

“All this rain has killed us, as far as getting some repetition,” coach Jones said. “We had a couple of glitches defensively and we were still trying to find our offense. In the next game we are going to come out and do the same things we have been doing, and hopefully get better.”

Weather permitting, the Eagles’ play Wiley College in a third game today at George Dobson Field.
