Kindergart­en opens tomorrow; firm will draft hospital plans

March 12, 1908: DAIRY LUNCH AWNING BURNED

The fire department­s were called out about noon today to the corner of Stateline and Front streets. A cloth awning in front of the Dairy Lunch run by Mr. P.E. Flowers caught fire in some unknown way and was destroyed. No other damage was done.

March 13: FIFTY MEN AT WORK ON KCS BUILDING

A force of about 50 men are at work cleaning and excavating a site for the new general office building of Kansas City Southern at Broad and Oak streets. Quite a lot of material for the new structure, mostly sand and gravel, is already on the ground. It is hoped the building will be completed by July.

MEN CHARGED WITH SLANDER

E. Robinson, a good looking young woman, aged about 20, swore out warrants in Judge Towery’s court this morning against two men named J. Seats and W. Young, charging them with slander. Both men were arrested. They will be given a hearing tomorrow morning. Young made bond for his appearance, pending a hearing, but Seats, being unable to furnish security, was lodged in jail. Slander is a rare reported crime, but E. Robinson said the things they said about her she would not let pass.

March 15: THIEVES MAKE BOLD ATTEMPT TO STEAL HORSE

Thieves stole $6 worth of feed from the barn of Deputy Sheriff W.E. Peters on Rose Hill last night and had gone back after his horse when Mr. Peters arrived on the scene in response to a “hurry up” telephone call from Mrs. Peters, who had discovered the thieves at their work. Mr. Peters fired several shots at the two men and thinks he hit one of them. It was one of the boldest attempts in theft that has been recorded in this section in a long while.

March 16: MAN CHARGED WITH ASSAULTING MARRIED WOMAN

W. Long, a man about 25 or 27 years old, was arrested and lodged in the county jail on the West Side of the city last night about 8 o’clock on a warrant sworn out by Justice Williams’ court a couple of hours earlier, charging him with criminal assault upon his cousin Mrs. Strickland, a married woman. Mrs. Strickland swore out the warrant herself. She claims that the crime was committed at her home while she and the defendant were there alone. All the

March 17: RESIDENCE PROPERTY CHANGING HANDS

Messrs. Ralph G. Moore and Alex G. Sanderson this morning sold the elegant home at the corner of 14th and Pecan streets, known as the Clingan place, to Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Howze. It is a handsome and well-appointed home with two full lots. The considerat­ion was 2,500 cash. Mr. Howze and family will occupy the property within the next 10 days or two weeks. Messrs. Conway and Arnold sold two vacant lots at 18th and Pecan Streets to Mrs. F.R. Clifton, considerat­ion being $700. Mrs. Clifton will at once erect a rent residence on the property.

March 18: KINDERGART­EN OPENS TOMORROW

Give the associatio­n in their efforts to maintain a kindergart­en in our city the encouragem­ent of a large enrollment on opening day. Bring the children to Central School, Arkansas, tomorrow morning at nine o’clock. The new director, Miss Sphar, of Chicago, comes with the highest possible recommenda­tions, and the only thing necessary to ensure the success of the school is a full attendance.

March 12, 1968: STABBING VICTIM IS RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

Don C. Bowers, 14, of 2125 N. Robison Road, who suffered stab wounds and a head injury Sunday night behind the Security Savings and Loan building in Oaklawn Village, was released from Wadley Hospital. Bowers told officers at about 8:30 p.m. he heard a woman scream behind the building and ran to investigat­e. When he ran around the building, an unknown assailant hit him over the head, then stabbed him and kicked him after he fell. He said he did not see who attacked him.

March 14: HOSPITAL PLANS TO BE DRAFTED

The Atlantic Hospital Authority voted Tuesday night to employ Page, Southerlan­d and Page, hospital architects and consultant­s of Austin, Texas, to draw plans for a 65-bed hospital for presentati­on within 30 days to the Texas State Health Department. The plans will be accompanie­d by an applicatio­n for a federal Hill-Burton Hospital grant of $1,000,000.

March 15: THIEVES STEAL TWO TIRES FROM CAR ON SCHOOL LOT

Tire thieves struck again as they stole two tires off a 1968 automobile parked in the Texas High parking lot. Ronnie Smith of Wildwood Street discovered the theft about 3:45 p.m. as he left classes to go home. Investigat­ing Officer John Robert Slover said someone used a small jack to lift Smith’s car to take the two front tires and wheels. Slover said the car was left on the jack. The tires and wheels were valued at about $180.

March 16: HONOR STUDENTS TO ATTEND LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Darlene Faye Haywood and Donald Ray McNeal, honor students of the Dunbar Junior-Senior High School, have been selected by the counselor to participat­e in the annual Southwest Leadership Institute at Prairie View College, Prairie View, Texas, on March 16-17, 1968. The institute will offer advanced training on industrial management techniques and communicat­ion skills and is designed for 16 hours of instructio­n.

March 17: DRAINAGE AREA OF LAKE COVERS VAST TERRITORY

The drainage area of the Lake Texarkana Dam covers approximat­ely 3,400 square miles. Elevations (feet M.S.L.) are 220.0, conservati­on pool: 259.5, flood control pool; 250.5, spillway crest; and 266.0, top of dam. The dam is 18,000 feet in length at crest. The maximum height is 100 feet, and the spillway width is 200 feet. The dam height above mean valley is 76 feet. Storage capacity is 145,300 acre-feet, conservati­on pool; and 2,509,000 acre-feet, flood control pool.

March 18: LAKE HAS SIX RECREATION AREAS FOR USE

There are six major recreation­al areas on Lake Texarkana providing a variety of facilities. Big Creek, located west of the boat lane nearest the dam; Spring Lake Park; Kelly Creek; Shady Harbor; Kickapoo Lodge; and Kickapoo.
