Arkansas High baseball team defeats Pleasant Grove, 8-4,
Razorbacks post ‘huge win’ against PG, 8-4
Arkansas High left no doubt in the crosstown clash on the baseball diamond with Pleasant Grove.
AHS took an early lead, snapped a 2-all tie in the fifth and then broke the game open with a four-run sixth inning to defeat PG, 8-4, Monday evening at Razorback Field.
“Huge win for our program,” Arkansas High head baseball coach Layne Berry said. “Pleasant Grove is traditionally solid year in and year out. Great Coach (Riley Fincher) and a great program, so for us it’s exciting and fun.”
The Hogs were able to score two runs in the second inning on an overthrow to first base.
Gage Gore went 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and gave up four hits for the Razorbacks. He received a no-decision, and first reliever Dylan Adcock picking up the win.
Ryan Galvan pitched 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts and gave up four runs in the start for the Hawks.
“Gore did everything we asked of him today,” Berry said. “We asked him to go four innings and he was able to go four plus. Our pitching was outstanding today. It was bullpen day for Dylan Adcock and Drake (Browning) came in to finish it off.I told the guys it’s easy to pitch when you have a lead.
“Our pitchers needed confidence. It was big for our pitchers to go out, compete and get the win tonight.”
The Hawks’ offense showed signs of life in the fourth inning when Ben Harmon drove in Carson Cox to put PG on the board.
Not to be outdone, AHS answered back with two runs in the fifth inning to take command of the lead.
“Tonight we were able to capitalize off the breaks we were given,” Berry said. “So many of those breaks have been going against us, so I’m proud of my guys for taking advantage when we could.”
Drake Browning led the Hogs at the dish, going 2 for 4 with an RBI. Wren Williams finished his night going 1 for 2 for AHS and also scored a run, while Nick Vaughn went 1 for 2 and also scored a run.
“From top to bottom, the guys came in clutch tonight in our batting order,” Berry said. “Freshman Graydon Martin came in and did a great job for us. Sometimes the bottom of our order struggles a bit and Wren came through with a big hit. If we get everyone rolling, we’re going to be hard to beat.”
Seth Hopkins led the Hawks at the plate, going 3 for 4 with a double. Tyler Kelley was 1 for 3 with a double for PG.
Arkansas High (5-4) opens conference play Thursday at home, hosting Lake Hamilton. Pleasant Grove hosts Spring Hill Friday.
