‘Adam Ruins Everything’ uses laughter to reveal the truth

- By Sarah Jamieson

Cracking up the veneer: If you listen to Adam Conover, nothing is what it seems. The comedian embarks on a playful, funny and sometimes intense quest to reveal the hidden truths behind everyday subjects in “Adam Ruins Everything,” which returns for a new season on Tuesday, March 20, on truTV.

Host and investigative comedian Conover tackles all manner of topics, ranging from the workplace and voting to forensic science and security. Not only does he make his audience see the world in a new way, he provides lots of fun facts to share.

This season, he examines how our perception tricks us, why people find it difficult to file their taxes, and why IQ tests aren’t an accurate measure of intelligence. He also looks at how fake psychics trick their victims and dismisses the faked moon landing conspiracy. Another episode examines why flawed studies get famous and why detox cleanses are a ripoff. Conover delves into the common history we take for granted, such as why the Mona Lisa is famous, how Hawaii became a state, and the disturbing history of the suburbs.

Conover got the gig as host after joining College Humor as a staff writer and cast member. The comedian starred in a few originals, including “Mitt Romney Style,” and has also appeared in “Hardly Working.” He’s performed with The Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in NYC, a comedy troupe that’s launched the careers of many TV and film stars, and now hosts “Fresh Out,” a comedy show at UCB Sunset.

Watch as Conover reveals the awful truth about a beloved part of your world. Don’t worry, you’ll be laughing at the same time. The season premiere of “Adam Ruins Everything” airs Tuesday, March 20, on truTV.

Silicon 101: Silicon Valley has been rewriting innovation for more than a century. Life-changing technologies originated in the Valley, including radio, internet, radar, satellites and smartphones. Despite the area’s impact on our lives, its history has remained largely in the dark — until now. If you’ve ever wondered how the San Franciscan neighborhood became a powerhouse for technological breakthroughs, you won’t want to miss “Silicon Valley: The Untold Story.” The new docuseries premieres Monday, March 19, on Science.

The show investigates the history of the Valley’s brutal competition with exclusive insights from entrepreneurs, industry professionals, academics and journalists specializing in tech. Some prominent innovators interviewed for the series include Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Y-Combinator founders Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston. The series talks to Kyle Vogt, the man behind the four-person selfdriving car, who sold his company to General Motors for $1 billion. It also features Gordon Moore, the Intel cofounder, and Crowd Smart’s chairman, Kim Polese.

Heidi Roizen, a venture capitalist who co-founded the software company T/Maker, explains the hurdles women continue to face in the industry. Prof. Margaret O’Mara from the University of Washington discusses what made the area such an incubator for innovation, along with historian Leslie Berlin from Stanford University. Author Michael Malone, who has written numerous books about Silicon Valley and has an encyclopedic knowledge about it, also speaks on the series, and New York Times tech journalist John Markoff discusses the media’s role in Silicon Valley’s success.

The now giants of the tech industry came from small beginnings, but they didn’t do it alone — many of the projects got off the ground with government funding. The series examines the government’s role in the industry of innovation, and what the future holds for the Valley.

Don’t miss “Silicon Valley: The Untold Story,” premiering Monday, March 19, on Science.
