‘Singing My Song’ was a hit for Tammy Wynette

This week in 1969: 21 Black Panthers were indicted in New York City for plotting to kill policemen; U.S. deaths in Vietnam totaled 33 ,641 ; thousands marched down The Av e n u e Of The Americas in New York City to protest The Vietnam War; and a singer from Mississippi had her 9th hit record.

According to Glenn Sutton, a lot of his songs were written out of necessity and Tammy Wynette’s 1969 No. 1 “Singing My Song” was certainly one of those tunes.

Glen commented, “That was just a song we wrote, simply because Tammy was going to record and we needed a song.

“We were just trying to write everything we could for the artists we had in house. That was just a lot easier than having to get out and find good songs for those artists. We just tried to write as many of them as we could ourselves, and Tammy had to have a song for a session so Billy Sherrill and I sat down and wrote one.

“I don’t remember where the idea came from. A lot of times, we just start doodlin’ around on the piano or guitar and one of us would come up with a line—the other one would add a line and off we’d go.

“And that was one of those songs that listed Tammy as co-writer. I know she wasn’t even in the building when we wrote that song. Why her name is on the song as co-writer, I have no idea—and no, I never mentioned it. I had a third of a Tammy Wynette No. 1 and that was OK with me!

Tammy Wynette’s Epic single “Singing My Song” made the charts April 12, 1969, and made it to No. 1 on May 31st, where it stayed for two weeks.

It was her 9th charted song and her 6th No. 1.
