Lady Tigers fall at home

- By Brian Tyl

It was almost a no-hitter.

Sulphur Springs’ Bailey Haggerty threw a 1-hitter as the Lady Wildcats shut out Texas High, 13-0, in a District 16-5A softball game Monday at Lady Tiger Field.

Lady Tiger senior Ashley Wyrick singled to right center in the seventh to break up Haggerty’s no-hit bid.

“Our Achilles heel is that we don’t hit very well,” Texas High head coach Robbie Hatfield said. “And when you don’t hit and don’t score any runs, it’s hard to win. The only good thing was the hit in the seventh to break up that no-hitter. Our defense made errors, and we weren’t good in the circle.

“We don’t ever give up. Even though it doesn’t look good, we will continue to battle. We just came out flat today.”

Tiger starter Mabry Smith tossed five innings, gave up five runs—four unearned—scattered eight hits and struck out seven.

Haggerty struck out 10, allowed a hit and walked one.

It was a closer game heading into the seventh, with the Wildcats up 5-0. Sulphur Springs scored eight runs in the frame on a double, six singles and two Texas High errors.

The Tigers only had two base runners the entire game. Kaitlyn Cross walked in the second inning, and Wyrick reached on her single in the seventh.

Neither of Texas High’s base runners made it past first base.
