PG still flying high in district

Pleasant Grove’s bats got hot early and kept its unbeaten district record alive on Senior Night.

The Hawks sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning while scoring nine runs to set an early tone en route to a 13-3 run-rule victory over North Lamar on Friday at Hawk Field.

Keaton Russo go the scoring started when a fly ball to left field was dropped to bring home Carson Cox, who reached on a lead-off single. Seth Hopkins brought in Jackson Cobb and Russo with a sharp single to left field.

After a walk by Ben Harmon, Braden Hlvainka launched a three-run shot over the left-field wall to increase the Hawks’ lead, 6-0. An Ethan Hart walk and two errors later, Hopkins drove in his fourth RBI of the inning with a single.

Pleasant Grove got back on the board again in the third after keeping the Panthers scoreless through two. Russo got on base with a single and Hopkins got his fifth RBI on a single to give the Hawks a 10-lead. Hopkins would later score on a double by Hlavinka.

North Lamar scored two runs—one in the fourth and one in the fifth—to cut into its deficit, 11-3.

The Hawks, however, added two more runs in bottom of the fifth to end the game. Cobb led the inning off with a lead-off triple and Russo scored him with a sac- rifice fly. With one out, Hopkins came inches away from a home run as he banged a triple off the wall and Hlavinka hit a walk-off single.

Cobb finished 2 for 4 at the plate with a triple for Pleasant Grove, Hopkins was a perfect 4 for 4 with three singles, a triple and 5 RBI, and Hlavinka had three hits, including a triple and a home run. Nick Voyles pitched the complete game and struck out three.
