Local, area girls qualify for regional track meets

EMORY, Texas—Several female athletes at the 4A area track and field meet were omitted as second-place regional qualifiers in Friday’s edition due to time constraint­s.

Pleasant Grove’s Rebecca Pickleman placed second in the high jump to qualify for the Region II-4A meet, scheduled for next week at Texas A&M University­Commerce.

Liberty- Eylau’s Taoni Reynolds also qualified in the 300 hurdles by placing second.

For Atlanta, Hannah Wicks was runner-up in the 800 meters for a berth to regionals, Alyssa Simmons was second in the 100 meters, and Chelsea Simmons placed second in the 200 meters. The Lady Rabbs’ 800 and 1600 meter relay teams also were second-place finishers to advance to regionals.

The majority of the firstand second-place finishers from local and area schools were published Friday.

The top four from the area meet advance to the regional.

CLASS 3A AREA MEET Mustangs, Lady Tigers win

OMAHA-NAP LES, Texas—Hughes Springs’ boys and Daingerfie­ld’s girls won their respective championsh­ips at the 3A area meet held at Brahma Stadium.

The Mustangs scored 126 points to outdistanc­e runner-up Hooks, which had 83. Cooper scored 68 for third.

Daingerfie­ld netted 104 points to take the girls’ title, with New Boston scoring 79 to edge Prairiland (78) for second. Queen City’s girls were a close fourth with 76.

The Daingerfie­ld team of Layla Johnston, Montrevia Durham, Joi Akinsuroju and Kadeviuonn­a Andrews won the 4x100 relay. New Boston was second.

Andrews also took gold in the 400 meters, and Johnston was runner-up. Kiara Robinson won the dis- cus for the Lady Tigers, and Daingerfie­ld’s 4x200 relay placed second behind the Queen City relay team of Ciara Walker, Tiera Johnson, Jessica Jones and Madison Jones.

Morgan McAlexande­r and Haley McAlexande­r went 1-2 in the triple jump for New Boston. Haley McAlexande­r also won the 200 meters, ahead of QC’s Walker. Chloe Davis took gold in the high jump for the Lady Lions and was second in the 100 hurdles.

Paul Pewitt’s Kaitlyn Turner won the 100 meters and second in the long jump.

For Hughes Springs, Malayah Everett won the shot put, and Kensley Echols was second. Jaycee Alexander also placed second in the 3,200 meters for HS.

Redwater’s Sydney Hornbuckle won the 1,600 meters and was runner-up in the 800.

Hailey Sutton won the pole vault for Hooks, and DeKalb’s Hailey Dalby was second.

On the boys side, Hughes Springs’ 4x400 relay team of Chandler King, Daniel Allen, Markees Kemp and Trey Beam won ahead of Paul Pewitt.

Hooks took the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Logan Murray, Teaondrick Wade, Mason Price and Carter Duncan made up the 4x200 relay for the Hornets, and Murray, Price, Marquiz Estell and Duncan comprised the 4x100 team. Hughes Springs placed second in both of the relay races.

Estell also took gold in the triple jump, with Redwater’s Joshua Long second. Murray won the 100 meters with Daingerfie­ld’s Ty’Jaylon Wilkerson second.

Tradarian Craver took the 200 meters, and Beam was runner-up in the 300 meters. King placed second in the 400.

Reggie Jeter won the high jump for Daingerfie­ld.

Christian Little of Queen City was a double winner in the shot put and discus, and teammate James Stone was second in the 3,200 meters. Hughes Springs’ Hunter Brabham was runner-up in the shot put.

DeKalb’s JaQuan Jackson was the top long jumper, and Hooks’ Shamar Jefferson was second. Dewayne Gray of DeKalb was second in the 110 hurdles.

The top four from the area meet advance to the regional next week at Whitehouse.

7-3A JUNIOR HIGH MEET Genoa girls, Wolves win

PRESCOTT, Ark.— Genoa Central’s junior high girls and Prescott’s junior high boys each won their Conference 7-3A track and field meet on Eddie Jackson Field at Cummins Stadium.

The Lady Dragons finished with 229 points, which edged the Prescott girls (228.5), and Gurdon was a distant third (62.5).

The Curley Wolves racked up 288 points to earn first, Gurdon was second (169) and Genoa Central boys were third (81).

SOFTBALL

Lady Panthers win two

COVE, Ark.—Ashdown earned two wins, 7-3 and 11-5, in a doublehead­er against Cossatot River on Thursday.

Adaysia Thompson earned the win in the circle in Game 1, allowed three runs on two hits, walked one and struck out nine.

Aleya Hill was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI, and Kenya Wilson smacked a pair of doubles with an RBI for the Lady Panthers. Brittany Johnson hit a 1-run single for Ashdown.

Lannah Huddleston got the win in Game 2, pitched five innings, gave up no earned runs, allowed five runs on three hits, and struck out four for the Panthers. Huddleston was hit a pair of singles and drove in two runs, Kara Earnest doubled, singled and drove in a pair of runs, Blair Gentry hit a 2-run single, and Makhia Cook laced in a 1-run double.
