Junior has marquee night

- By Bob Krayl Special to the Gazette

It was Senior Night at Lady Tigers Field, but it was Mabry Smith who stole the show Friday in Texas High’s 4-0 victory over Greenville in a fast-moving District 15-5A contest that only took one hour, 12 minutes.

The junior right-hander struck out a career-high 19 batters, allowed four hits and did not issue a base on balls. But that wasn’t all.

Smith had a two-run homer, a triple and a double to drive in all four runs.

“I had all my pitches working well, especially the rise ball,” Smith said. “I was able to hit the corners, and my rise ball fooled several batters with the speed of the pitch.”

Smith didn’t get a chance to hit for the cycle—getting a single—as she only came to bat three times.

“She really threw all her pitches well tonight, and working the corners,” said THS coach Robbie Hatfield.

Texas High ended its regular district season in fourth place with a 7-5 record, and will play No.1 seed Forney at 7 p.m. Thursday at Commerce.

“They are really good, and we”ll have to play our best,” Hatfield said. “In a one-game playoff, anything can happen.”

Texas High got on the scoreboard quickly with a run in the first frame. Senior Ashley Wyrick led off with a single and scored on Smith’s triple over the right-fielders’ head.

After two outs in the third inning, Korie Hamilton kept the inning alive with a single, and Smith followed with a line drive home run over left field wall.

The Tigers scored their final

run in the fifth on a single by Hamilton and a double down the left field line by Smith.

Senior Ryann Williams had an infield single to close out her career at Lady Tigers Field.
