Lady Eagles give away runs to Alexandria

- By Bob Krayl

The Texas A&M University-Texarkana Lady Eagles were in a generous mood Saturday morning, giving away seven unearned runs to LSU-Alexandria.

After being swept by TAMU-T in a doubleheader Friday, the Lady Generals were grateful for the gift as they came away with a 7-1 victory at Bramlett Field.

The Eagles have been on a roll lately, winning five of their last six games, but played their worst game in several weeks by committing five errors.

With the loss Texarkana falls to 14-18 on the season, and 11-10 in Red River Conference play.

The Eagles close out their regular season play next weekend against Texas College in Tyler.

Six of the nine RRC teams qualify for the playoffs, and Texarkana is currently in fifth place.

LSU-A, the second place team, improves to 22-13 on the season and 14-6 in conference action.

“We just gave away too many runs, and we didn’t have much offense, said TAMU coach Marie Stone. “The one positive thing is that we won 2 of 3 from the second-place team.”

The Eagles scored their only run in the second inning.

Kacie Maines led off the inning with a double and Hannah Cooper followed with a single. Kallee King drew a walk to load the bases.

Winning pitcher Abbey McMillian then retired the next two batters before Olivia Mueller beat out a little dribbler up the third base line to score Maines.

The Generals soon grabbed the lead with two runs on just two hits in the third, taking advantage of two errors.

Cassie Vasquez came on in relief of Ashley Nipper in the fourth inning, and was the victim of poor defense as LSU-A put up five unearned runs for a 7-1 advantage. The Generals had only three hits in the inning, taking advantage of two errors, a walk and hit batter.

Leadoff batter Kimber Gruehl, Alexis Hagan, and Jessica Hampton paced the Generals’ nine-hit attack with two hits each.

Five players had one hit each for the Eagles with Maines and Alyssa Steward getting a double each.

TAMU had only one hit after the second inning. LSU-A 002 050 0 — 7 9 1 TAMU-T 010 000 0 — 1 5 5 Abbey McMillian and Lauren Rachal. Ashley Nipper, Cassie Vasquez (4) and Hannah Cooper. WP-McMillian. LP-Nipper.
