Rebecca Potter, publications advisor at Texas High School, has received the Texas Trailblazer Award from the Texas Association of Journalism Educators.

The award honors educators who are on the forefront of high school journalism, those who are risk takers, who work to expand the scope and capability of Texas scholastic journalism and try to push the envelope of conventional scholastic journalism to new venues or methods.

Potter has been in the education field for 24 years and with Texarkana Independent School District for 20 years. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and political science from Baylor University and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Potter began serving as the Texas High School publications advisor in 2001 and has led students to win numerous Columbia Scholastic Press Association Crown Awards, National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker Awards and Interscholastic League Press Conference Star Awards.

“Mrs. Potter is truly one of the best in her field as evident by receiving this award,” Brad Bailey, Texas High principal, stated in a press release. “She has shaped the school’s efforts in journalism, has been key to our students and publications setting trends across the state and has always worked toward students achieving success and receiving accolades for top effort in their work.”
