Mission Texarkana to host daddy-daughter dinner fundraiser

- By Ashley Gardner

Mission Texarkana’s Love You Too The Moon And Back: Daddy Daughter Dinner is scheduled for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Cross Pointe Baptist Church, 3130 University Ave., Texarkana, Texas.

The event will feature food cooked by Chef Jeff Loving.

“Fathers and Daughters, especially in our area, don’t get many chances to dress up and attend fancy events together,” said Cody Howard, Mission Texarkana executive director. In this culture it’s easy to raise these girls and never be able to have special times like these. That’s why we wanted to have special times for dads and daughters.”

Tickets tot the banquet are $25 per person. Proceeds from the event will benefit Mission Texarkana and will be used to build a larger center for the organization, a big need in the community.

“We’re the main feeding center in the city. When shelters turn out during the day, the homeless come to us for breakfast and lunch. Not only the homeless but the impoverished and those struggling with food insecurity. We feed 300 people a day but we only have room for 47 people at a time. It causes a soup kitchen line which we don’t want. It takes dignity away from people. We want to be able to accommodate them as soon as they show up here,” Howard said.

The cost of the new center, which will have room for 100 people at a time, is expected to be about $200,000. Howard said Mission Texarkana has raised approximately half the money needed and won’t start construction until it has all the money in hand.

“We want to get money raised first. We depend on donations from the churches and the community to function day-to-day so I don’t want to put the cart before the horse and start building and not be able to finish it,” Howard said.

The link to purchase tickets is available on the Mission Texarkana or Church Under the Bridge Facebook pages or at Eventbrite.com.
